Default 996 TT - Manual vs. Tiptronic

Can you guys tell me the different between a Manual vs Tiptronic in a 996TT. My wife want to TT so she can drive it, I have always had a Manual. I am not opposed to it, but on resale is it an issue. Please let me know your thoughts...thanks.

What's more important to you? Resale value of a car several years (or more) hence or your marriage.

Go with the Tip. Of course bring wife with you and have her test drive the car to ensure it meets with her approval.

If you both like the car, if the car is worth owning, and you can work out a suitable deal for the car, buy it, drive it, enjoy it. The resale value shouldn't be that big of an issue.

BTW, you can do more for the resale value by finding and buying a good example and taking good care of the car, showering it with (documented) love, so when you do go to sell the car its condition -- good -- is verifiable and you can show you loved the car while you owned it.

There will certainly be more examples of cars not of this type so your car will compare favorably to these less desirable examples. Result? Your car will have a higher resale value.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Why would you worry about resale if you are buying used? You would be getting the tip at a reduced rate so if and when you sell it really is a net zero.

I am just asking because when I had my 02 BMW M3, the 6 speed was more valuable than the SMG. Also, when it came to the M3, Silver on Grey was not as desirable...is that the same for the 911TT. Thanks for your advice...and if you know of any sub $50K cars, let me know...looking for low miles and well documented. TIA.

I would prefer much less than $50...low $40's is my comfort zone.
I am sure I am work on my wife if I found the perfect one and it was a manual.

The one I have my eyes on is an 2003 with 20K miles with X50 for $55K. Out of my range...but it's what I like...Silver/Terrcotta

55K is way high for an 03 tip. Is it at a dealer? Have you made an offer?

This one is a Manual. No, it's on eBay.

I am not trying to confuse...I am interested in both, just prefer something we both can drive - or if I find the right Manual...then I will have to teach her how to drive.

Like Dell said, they are out there, but don't run away from the Tip. I have two Tips and I love them. They make the daily driver experience much more comfortable in you are in any major metro traffic congestion. Also, the old adage of "if Momma's not happy, then nobody's happy" also truly applies here...

In a pre-owned vehicle, I'd go with Tip, as the issue of driveline abuse is minimized. One always wonders if owner #1 tries one last banzai blast off the line before he sells it. Turbos and tips are a good match, the tip is a strong trans, you won't need to replace a clutch at 40,000 miles, and you make your wife happy. Sounds like a grand slam. AS

Everytime I'd get stuck in heavy traffic in the 996, I'd long for the Tip. Driving the Boxster with the Tip while sitting in traffic, I'd think, "this is great, glad in not in the 996". I've killed the 996 more than once, embarassing to sat the least. I'm looking for a replacement for the gone 996 and would certainly and may even prefer a Tip.

my views.. just bought a TT 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it.. decided to trade up my 964 (though still have it for now) because I wanted a manual. In Malaysia and South east Asia generally manuals are as rare as rocking horse poo... i.e there arent many around. Ironically after driving a few manual turbos, mainly 993s and one 996 TT manual (which kept popping out of 2nd gear which as many of you know is a common fault) I actually ended up buying a tiptronic again. Other than the fact that I had loads more choice. I actually think the nature of the Turbo suits a tiptronic, unless you want to track of course. I found when the power is really kicking in nicely, you have to back off and change gears, unlike the tip which you can just keep planted to the floor... Never thought I would say it, but short of a DSG box I think the Tip is a good choice.. Of course I have my eye on a nice little 993 6 speed to replace the 964 should we decide to stay as 2 911 family...
