Red face Advice for potential new 996 turbo owner

Looking into buying a 996 turbo, any advice to x50 or not to x50, miles, prices I should be looking at. Any difference in the years, very hesitant in buying a 2001 cause it was the first year. I currently own an E46 m3 vert which has been alot of fun but looking for an upgrade.

X50 or not: if you are going to modify the car and upgrade the turbos, then I wouldn't pay a premium for them. If you plan on staying stock, then X50 is a good option.

Not much difference in the years, do a quick search - has been discussed several times... Get the newest car you can afford seems to be the general consensus. There are many, many 2001's out there that are doing very well, so I wouldn't rule them out.

Good luck on your search! Here is a good link to check out:

01 had no glovebox, and rare manual gear "pop outs" and solid spoke wheels (heavier)
X50 and 05 Turbo S have the k24 turbo's and 450HP. Evo, among other brands offer HP increases for the k12 stock set ups.
I too, am shopping for a 996TT.
The sport seat option is rare and sought after, the nav units are not well liked.
I have a E46 M3 as well, fun cars.

Just a small correction: the X50 and S cars are 444 HP (Everyone, even Dealers, seem to advertise them as 450). The more important point is their 457 lb-ft of torque. This engine has so much twist that you can essentially pop the clutch after a full stop and the car will gently idle off. This is a seeming cream puff with the heart of a land shark.

The S also comes standard with the PCCBs -- Porsche's ceramic brakes. I love them, and don't expect to do anything to them while I own the car. The S also comes with the full power sport seats.

i purchased a 03, non x-50, with 35k miles and have been relatively pleased with the reliability. if you do not plan to track or drag race the car then the standard tt should have all the power you need. if you want more you can always get it flashed and that will add another 60+ hp to the base line. in my particualr case the issues i have had is replacing power stearing resorvoir, slave clutch cylinder, and replaced coils/plugs. i do have the sport seats which are a great option. do not understand why sport seats are not on all tt.

good luck.
