Default What is a good radar detector to get?

I'm thinking about getting a radar detector and I'd like to hear your recommendations. Also, are they illegal in CA?
Thanks,

V1 and Passport are the 2 standouts. Diehards in both camps. IMHO, either one is exceptional.

VA is the ONLY state in these United States where a radar detector is still illegal (CT and DC repealled some time ago). Of course.....I live in MD and find many necessary routes take me through VA...

AFAIK, CA is fine for detectors.

I've used a V1 now for 6 or 7 years. Swear by it.

The last 5+ years I've been in CA and of course drive here constantly but at various times I can and do drive through all states west of the Mississippi River and some east of it, and use the V1 all the time. (On the open highway I use a handheld CB radio too to help stay abreast of the "bear traps".)

Remember a radar detector does not provide carte blanche to drive at excessive speeds at any time, nor does it make your car invisible to radar/laser and to traffic enforcement officers, so you have to use it intelligently and you still have to drive safely at all times.

Sincerely,

Macster.

+ 1 for the V1.
Mike Valentine is also a RL member IIRC.

Valentine-1, once you got arrows, you never go back. Well, unless it's a built-in radar detector, but if Valentine Research made built-in radars w/ directional arrows, then they would do very well in that segment of the market.

Valentine 1 - as Macster said "Remember a radar detector does not provide carte blanche to drive at excessive speeds...", but it's the best available.

Ask for one of their '30 day demo returns'...if they have none, ask to be put on the llist. For some reason it seems to 'clear' in a few days. 10% off, new stock, new packng/accessories, full warranty.

Cheaper than ebay!

Loved the V1 until some a-hole crashed my window and stole it in broad daylight! K-40 conceled now and not looking back.

I don't recall every seeing a group buy on a V1.
I would imagine no one ever asked Mike.
Send him a PM and see what he says.
