I just went through this exercise myself (see my post about comparing a 996 tt with a 993). I agonized over the difference in looks, and the fact that the 993tt will most certainly hold its value more. In the end, I opted to buy a 996tt x50. Why? Well-for starters the interior of the 996 is vastly nicer. Then I had a long chat with a Porsche mechanic suggested that the 996 will be more reliable, and then lastly I drove it (truthfully, I didnt drive a 993--just sat in it). I recently also was priveledged to attend the cross-Canada Porsche tour, where I drove a brand new 2009 c4s on both the street and then in a controlled track event- which is an utterly fantastic car. The 996tt is almost identical in feel to the brand new 911, but faster. So the 996tt is, in my opinion, every bit as tight, quick and fantastic to drive-- but way cheaper. Like the other guys said--drive one--you'll be convinced. I was.

I was all ready to buy a 996TT, but drove a 993 again, and realized that it wasn't true to my heart to get the 996. The 996TT is faster, more comfortable, and more modern than the 993, but it doesn't say "Porsche" to me as much as the older models, which is why I will be paying more for the older car.
Drive one, and see if it resonates with you.

You're right. Buy both.
For those accusing 993 guys of trashing 996's, I love both of my cars but for different reasons. I'm trying to talk myself into upgrading the C4S to a 996TT but am afraid to broach the subject with the smarter half. Maybe next year when the C4S comes off warranty. Like the bullet proof M96-70 engine in the 996TT.

for those that felt i was insulting them by asking the question --- i certianly didn't mean to get anyone's back up. obviously though i was being a little provocative and wanted a visceral responce, which i got. anyway im like the rest of you that i love all the p-cars and wish i could have more than one. ok so this morning i put a deposit on sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet 996tt that has zero issues, 76k texas highway miles and that im getting for 35k even. i drove it last night and it was crazy fast and fun has heck. i'll post pics soon. first mod -- new wheels and im going to paint the black lip on the front bumper to match the body. not to state the obvious but there are three groups of buyers for these cars:
1. those that bought them new because at the time it was the lastest and greatest and have since moved on to 997tt or gt3 or whatever
2. those that picked them up as a second owner over the last couple of years and have grown to appreciate these cars and see them as their supercar daily driver
3. and then guys like me who more recently have been buying them for less than 40k and see a 996tt as the single best bang for your buck. seriously how can anyone go wrong with that engine in an awd car at that price? and as a result what you guys on rennlist are going to be seeing are non-traditional buyers (that you may not have that much in common with) of these cars; on 6speedonline are all these guys selling their mustangs and getting 996tts. it's the democratization or obamafication of the tt and it's a good thing.

One more thing, you say that it's a good thing that the pony crowd is converting to 996 turbos, I say - God help us all!
Also please refrain from putting together the letters O.....B.....A.....M.....A as it makes me feel unwell.
