IMHO, the Boxster is more Porsche than the Cayenne or Panamera.
Not a fan of the wet sump/RMS.

2004 Boxster S was my first P-car. Great handling, lacking in the "cojones" dept.
Now, as soon as Scott @ renegade hybrids (http://www.renegadehybrids.com/) figures a kit for stuffing an LS engine in a Boxster, that problem will be solved!
I had a ride in one of his 914's with an LS-1 in it last year, and it was an eye-opener, to say the least! That thing will light up the tires, on any gear!

Iit's a Gary Fisher Mendota 2009 model. I am casual rider though and mostly use it when I take my son (now on 2 wheels) for a fun ride. For the bike rack, I have one on each of my P cars but you are right little expensive for the limited usage.I love the surprised look of people when they see it on a Twin Turbo

Considering sport car prices today, your theory may not hold %100. A new Boxster will cost more than a whole variety of used 911s.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a 911 guy through-and-through, owner of a 930, and my 996 X50, but the mid-engine platform just kicks ***. Only reason that it hasn't totally eclipsed the 911 is Porsche's decision to purposely keep it underpowered.

I vividly recall the stable ride , obviously much more enjoyable & esthetic with the top down although I was very mad to trail a Toyota camry on the HWY.

I think part of my question was when Spyder is mentioned in relation to the Boxster , how much of the proven P sports engineering went into designing the Boxster?

The Boxster has never done it for me. After I sold my 993 a few years ago I wanted another P car but driving a 997 while fast did not feel as good as the 993. When I drove a Cayman S it felt great and I bought it. It feels like the 993 with a better interior and it is great daily driver. However much I like the Cayman I'd go back to 993 in a heartbeat.

I'm not so sure it's as cut and dried as that.

If the mid-engine platform provided a significant advantage, then the ALMS 911's would never be in the mix against the Ferraris.

For another example, Car and Driver tested the 996 GT3 against the Ferrari Stradale in their January '04 edition. These two cars are about as equal in acceleration and braking as you can get, even the tire size and quality are essentially equal. This leaves essentially the placement of the engine as the only real variable between the two platforms. If the mid-engine provided a clear advantage over the rear-engine, then the test between these two cars would come very close to showing that advantage. Car and Driver tested these two cars at Gingerman...and the GT3 had faster lap times.

i enjoyed the drive home, the sound and easy shifting.. really fun car..

I bought a Boxtster new back in 2001 when they weren't as common as they are today. Back then there wasn't as much competition to it (Miata, BMW Z3?). I was barely 30 years old and was proud to own it. It was a ton of fun and a sharp looking car. Unfortunately by 2006 I saw them on the roads everywhere. The prices had plunged to the point that punks in their mid 20's were driving them on a regular basis. I always dreamed of the 911 since I was a little boy (remember that ad where the 10 yr old kid goes into the Porsche dealership and tells the salesman he'll be back in 20 years after seeing the new 911? Google it if u haven't ...it's awesome!) The final straw came when I saw a 200 pound 50 year old lady who parks in my office building ramp buy one. It took all of the cache away (no offense to larger women).
I then bought a 996 911 Cab and love it. Of course, then I got the Turbo itch and bought a 993 Turbo as well. Love em both. My point here (which is certainly not to offend the groups mentioned....sorry) is that it is a fun car but to say that it doesn't matter what car u drive in today's society is crazy. To buy more car than u can afford is even more crazy, though. If u have the means go with the 911. If not go w/ the Boxster. Both are great cars and beat the heck out of almost everything else for the $$$$'s spent.

The boxster could be a better car as it is a mid engine design. I guess that Porsche will keeping making 911's as long as people purchase them. I would buy a mid engine porsche if it had the same HP as the 911 series has. If that happen the 911 series would disappear. Lets see what happens in the future as vw is in the mix.
