Thanks Adam; Kevin has used Motul in the past although not 20w60. The oil debate for me has been whether or not to switch the car to a different product. The 300v has been used for the past 10,000 mi with good results; I cut the filter and there is no metal. I believe Motul is an imported Shell Oil product that claims 15,000 rpm formula 1 performance. I am not sure I am ready to just put "oil" into it..

While we are on this GREAT debate, I had a customer send me a link to Joe Gibbs racing oil. I am actually testing it right now. From my very brief exposure.. less than 2000 miles, it does look pretty good. I say this with caution. My visual cue and listening cues are giving me some hope.. My disclaimer is> the decision has not been made... Guys please hold off until I get a few oil samples and tested.

Changed my oil this weekend after 5000 miles of M1 5-40 TDT. There was no measurable oil usage (as measured by the bars in the display) in 5000 miles, and the ticking stayed at minimal levels.
After draining the oil, I realized I was 3 quarts short, so went to the autoparts store to get more oil, and to my surprise, they and everyone else were out of M1 TDT. I made an executive decision and got 3 gallons of Rotella 5-40.
We will see how it does over time, but oh my is my engine quiet running the Rotella. No audible ticking at idle what so ever. It purrs like a kitten (well maybe purrs like a tiger is more apt) on the Rotella.

I've also been running TDT, I'll have it analyzed next oil change.
So far at 2k miles, smoke at start-up only 1 time and quieter on cold start. I barely used oil before, so haven't noticed anything there.

For all of you smokers...
A week ago, I replaced the Venturi tube on my car. Part # 99611065270.
I used to have the occasional puff of oily white smoke on restart. It appears as if this cheap used car symptom has now be cured. The part doesn't appear to be stocked in the US, so it is a bit of wait to come from Germany. So far so good though. I'll update in a few weeks if the smoke resurfaces.

While Mobil 1 15W-50 can be used and is recommended for both street and track use, the new Mobil 1 Racing oils are not recommended for general street use where vehicles use catalytic exhaust converters. Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30 and Mobil 1 Racing 0W-50 are lower viscosity oils designed to protect the engine under high output conditions in high operating temperatures. Additionally, Mobil 1 Racing Oils offer boosted levels of anti-wear protection (nominal zinc level of 1850 ppm) for extra engine protection in highly loaded flat tappet engine designs like those used in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series.

There was an article in Excellence that the VANOS system and thicker oils were not a great partnership....so I'd be very cautious violating the seeming 5w limit in the oil approval list....

kevin actually had a thread on his old site where there was a discussion with Doug Hilary. He said he thought the 5w50 is quite good for our cars...can't imagine he would be too worried about 0W50.

It's a full racing oil. You will have to change the oil more often, with less detergents and oil stabilizers. Every 1000 miles > oil testing will allow one to see if it can be stretched. If you are changing just for the oil additives, I'd go with a heavy duty industrial engine oil >> Mobil TDT, Movil Delvac or Shell Rotella T6.. Take your pick.

The 1000 mile oil change might fit as that is about what I do now. Once a year.

Do you have a Mobil oil distributor around you? Most major metro areas have them.
I just bought 4 cases (24 quarts) from a nearby Mobil oil distributor here in Hayward, CA.
I asked and they do not ship, they are *NOT* set up to ship oil.
What I do is drop by and buy the oil over the counter. In fact this time I had to walk a hand truck from the main office across the lot to a warehouse building where the handtruck was loaded with 4 cases of oil then walk it back and load the oil in my car.
I don't mind. In fact, I was offered a warehouse job. Nice to know if my software engineering skills fall away I can still make a living pushing a handtruck. (Maybe I need to think about renewing my forklift and overhead bridge crane operator licenses?...)
Anyhow with taxes/other fees/charges the oil came to just under $195 or about $8.09/quart.
