996 turbo or cayenne turbo!!!
I have this problem really. I have test driven both the 996 turbo and a cayenne turbo. My gut is saying to get the 996 turbo but the woman and all laws of nature are telling me to get the cayenne, since I need a practical car(I own a M3 vert as well). Also I do not really need a car as I live in downtown Chicago and all driving is for pleasure. The woman has recently decided we need a practical car but I think the 996 could be considered practical. Please shed some light on these issues.

FWIW, respected Rennlist member T2 has both a 996TT (03 X50 IIRC) and a Cayenne Turbo (pig).
Perhaps you could send him a PM and ask him what his experience is.

I have the 996TT and a Cayenne S (sorry lewis, 110k miles and still looks and runs perfect!)
you have an M3 so sport car size weight that sits in the spot of where the 996 would go. so replace the M3 with the 996 or keep the M3 and get the cayenne.
however I would not waste the money on a turbo cayenne the S version is fine since it will only be to haul your family and groceries around. the extra hp is not needed in that vehicle.

When I see a Cayenne go by, I think "box" with big engine. It surely isn't a sports car, and whether turbo or not, offers no sports car virtues. It's a box that gets passengers and groceries and dogs in the back to places. And so, I wonder, why get one at all. Get a Honda CRV, which is a slightly smaller box, with smaller engine, and just as good or better in terms of reliability and economy. You wife would still get the ride she wants and you'd save money. And then, with a little more money and some looking, you'd find a nice 996TT that will put a smile on your face.

Impossible to compare a fine sporty SUV to a fine sports car, it is just not possible. Have them both and love them both for different reasons. I should admit comparing a Cayenne to a CRV sounds like a bad joke...get what you need, sporty utility (cayenne) or viagra substitute (996 TT).

Like tkerrmd I have a 996 Turbo and a Cayenne S.
It's a tough one. The Cayenne is a much more practical vehicle given the roads in the Chicago area, and the wife, but the 996 gets my adrenaline pumping everytime I drive it.
I would regret not getting the 996 if all I had was the Cayenne even if it made my wife happy.

I can't understand why you would only consider the Cayenne. If you want practical, consider alternatives.
My two primary cars are a 996 X50 and an E55 --- station wagon.
Off the line, the E55 kicks the 996's a**.
So, I get practical (and fast) and fun (and fast).
You would miss the M3 Vert. I miss mine. I'll add one back one of these days.

The Cayenne is a hell of a nice SUV for DD duties, but I would never compare it with a TT. I'll echo what Tom said, find a nice S model and save a few bucks over the turbo. I recently picked up a year old GTS, it rocks!

His is the 996 X50, her's is the C-TT, best of both worlds plus I get to drive the family around in a proper fun, fast SUV on the weekends (reminds me of an ad in the local paper when I was a kid for a 1973 (I think the year was correct) Ford Country Squire Station Wagon - 427 4 bbl - only listed as "fast, family fun") and she gets an occasional jaunt in the low flying aircraft - win win in my book - just write the two checks and keep smiling.

If you don't NEED a Cayenne, shouldn't even be a question, get the 996 TT. Hard to think that is what you are choosing between when the 996 only holds 2 people and has minimal storage capabilities, while the Cayenne is just a decent handling SUV with a big motor.

I own both, 04 Cayenne Turbo and a 04 996TT cab, both are modified, hands down the Cayenne is fun for the day to day drivinf around town, but really enjoy the 996, quicker, handles better and alot more approaches for drag racing from light to light... Don't really know which one to give up 1st?
