Default Why pay high for a 993TT or 993 NA ?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-...1%7C240%3A1308

After seeing this car and its condition and low mileage, I really do not understand why pay about $ 10K more for a NA 993 or more than $ 20K for a 993TT...

I guess is a matter of personal taste. Some people pay $250k for a '73 Carrera RS.. when they could have got a 997 GT2.

I used to have a 993 and the guys on the 993 forum are convinced that the 993 sits on hallowed ground. It's all about the rear fender flares and being the last of the air cooled engines. Love is blind. Personally, I find the 996TT to be far superior in almost all categories, from interior, to performance, to handling. The headlights are not my favorites but that is about the only drawn back for me. But then again, if I could afford it, I'd be driving a brand new GT2.

By many objective measures the 996 is a better car than the 993. It is faster, quieter, safer, etc, etc. But there are a lot more of them, and to most people I suspect the 993 represents a more beautiful shape and is preferred. It is a matter of preference and supply, nothing more.

Just an opinion, and not meant as a negative in any way. I am looking at the 996tt prices and wishing I had some cash to blow. That would be a hugely fun car.

Have you seen how much 993's are going for now? They have taken about the same hit as most all Porsches have. Its not easy finding someone to loan way above blue book value on a 10-13 year old car no matter what you may think it worth.

I agree, some 993s do seem to hold their value better, but finding a buyer is tough. The car is 11-13 yrs old, auto loans are almost impossible, you gotta find a buyer with cash in hand for a weekend toy. In this economy that is a tough sell, having said that I'm always in the market for a 97 blk/blk 993tt!

There is no question that the 996 can top the 993 in most objective measures. It’s the subjective measures which keep the 993 prices declining at a slower rate than the 996. Don’t forget they made vastly more 996's so supply is out there.

In terms of the TT models, the 996tt is the performance bargain of the century if you asked me. I have seen low miles 03's and 04's with the x50 set up going in the high 40's low 50's. The 993 IMHO is a very desirable car since they made so few and it is the pinnacle of the air-cooled cars.

I don’t care for the look of the 996, but that would not stop me from buying one based on dollars for performance.

You’re getting pushed on by the falling prices of the 997’s too,

bought a 96 with 16k miles in 03, sold it a yr later. I paid 71K and sold it for same. I MISS that car, beautiful best 911TT lines and crude in a way a german sports car should be.
I have to say I enjoy my 997TT better then the the previous gens I have had, but wish I kept the 993 in the stable.

I think a combination of the classic look and the limited numbers produced keep the prices on the 993's up. For example, only 5,900 - 993 Turbos were made between 96-97 compared with probably 10 times that many 996's

I had a choice between a 996 TT and the 993 TT and ended up with the 993 TT, paying more for it. The 996 was more refined, smoother etc. but it just did not give me the same raw feel when sitting in the car or while driving. The 993 TT gives me the direct feedback with the road I like, especially when driven hard, and the shape and lines are unmistakable.

It really comes down to what you believe the classic look and feel of your Porsche should be. I grew up loving the classic 911 shape so it was natural for me to stick with a 993 for my dream car. I felt Porsche lost a little in some of the styling on the 996's, and seem to have moved back closer to the 993's with their 997 models. As far as performance goes, I have no doubt the newer models keep getting better., but it is much more that draws us to these cars. You just can't beat them.

The 993 simply isn't perceived as an overproduced commodity, like the 996 and 997 families.

The cars now exist and are priced for completely different reasons.

Just the reality of the new Porsche under Dr. W
