Help Broke an Axle
Hey guys im new to the forum My dad has a 2002 996 911 turbo porsche with the X50 package, triptronic and it seems to have snapped the front drivers side axle when it was getting dyno'd(Is that just bad luck or what?). Anyone know where i can get a replacement axle? If i could buy one used from somebody that would be great Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum
Hopefully someone disconnected the driveshaft. You might also be looking at a destroyed front differential.. The only exception is if you ran it on a Mustang.
BTW you can't dyno tiptronic gearboxes. Dealer item for you axle.

?
How would i know if its a front diff? they didnt disconnect the driveshaft. It just broke the axle clean, almost in the middle. not sure if it was a mustang dyno or not. It drove fine just made a little noise front the axle shaft moving around

How? You'd take it to a qualified shop, with extensive experience with Porsches, and have them go through everything...after telling them the full story of what was done to the car.
How did your dad's turbo find itself lashed to a dyno? And then "seem to have snapped an axle"??
The 996TT is AWD. Unless you put it on a dyno in which the front AND rear wheels are turned at the same rate (ie all wheels on moving rollers) you will destroy the front diff, and maybe also break the driveshaft....
Just some advice, but whoever ran the dyno should most definitely NOT be advising you or working on the car.

There are only a few dyno's that you can use to dyno the 993TT and 996TT.. A Mustang and a newer Superflow >>they are mechanically linked. The rear roller is connected to the front roller.
The axle broke most likely because you popped the front diff.
So that you understand what we are trying to tell you.. It doesn't matter if it was a 4wd dyno or not. Unless it had a PTO or drive chain that links the rear roller to the front rollers, you damaged your diff.

Talk to Sharkwerks...they are in Fremont as well. They are also qualified to fix Porsches...You are incredibly lucky to be near them- check their reputation over on 6speedonline
034 doesn't look like they have expertise in 996TTs..... Why did you dad take it there?

You're new here, and I know the info these guys are giving you spells bad news, but trust me on this, they know what they are talking about. Your dad should never have taken the car to have it dyno'ed by someone who doesn't know the technical issues involved with the AWD system on the 996TT. It is not a 50/50 split AWD system.

i talked to someone at sharkwerks and told them what happened and he seemed to think it broke at the weakest link so it should be just the axle, right? You think the axle broke because of the diff? are you 100% sure

Not sure who you spoke to (Dan probably?) but it'd be really hard to diagnose over the phone but sadly from my experience when running a 996TT on a non-mechanically linked dyno the diff overheats. In my case, in 2002 it split/broke... Only took one pull to do that. I'd start looking at the front belly pan for fluid....
