Default 996 painted wheel optical illusion

H i all,
yesterday I saw a very nice set of painted 996 TT wheels.

I did try to show you what I saw using Photoshop.

the painting in reality was very good and gave the impression that the wheel was 19 inch or bigger!!!

harris

I think I will try this on my set....

I like the stock wheels as is... Only thing I was thinking of doing to the extra set that I have, was to paint them Seal Gray to match the car...

Anyway, it is only paint. You can always paint them back if you get tired of it. Go for it!

I always thought that seal grey colour (especially on wheels) was - is the best colour on a porsche.

I was more impressed by the way he did paint the wheels rather than the colour of it....
as well from the fact that the same wheel looked even bigger!!!

p.s. question: do 996 turbo S have painted wheels as standard option?

I don't know what your picture shows, but it looks like a perfectly normal 18" wheel with red lettering around the sides.....

I tried to show with circles what I mean...

and this is the best part of the painted wheels...the fact that they look original...BUT bigger....

strip all the paint and put a complete brush finish. that would look spectacular and orginal. I have not seen anyone do that. look at an HRE wheel with a brush finish for inspiration.

My OEM wheels are all nicked and scratched from being used as track wheels. I was thinking about painting them black now that my season is pretty much done...

this is what a brush finish can look like if done correctly. you can create a nice finish just takes some dexterity and patience. some fine emory cloth and some synthetic steel wool. once you get the desired texture just spray some automotive clear acrylic urethane and it will maintain the brilliance and easy to clean.

mike, this finish would be ideal if your wheels get knicked up you can easily just hit it with the emory cloth or steel wool.

Harris;

Great Idea !
Nice work and thanks for sharing.
Stock wheels look too bulky. This "thins" them out.

Doesn't look that different to me. I'd go with the "strip the paint", would look very unique. Good luck.
