Oil Pressure drops to zero then back up?
My Dad owns an 02 996 with the X50 package. He told me the oil pressure will drop to zero sporadically while driving then bounces back up. After some research, it sounds like the Oil Pressure Sensor is going bad. Can anyone confirm this before he purchases one?
Thanks,
Thomas

That is "normally" the fix for the problem you describe, unless you find it's a loose connection.

Thanks for the help. Can anyone provide a diagram or tell me where the sensor is located? Is it something that is easily accessible or is the car headed to my Dads mechanic?

Hi everyone, I'm bumping this ancient thread, as I'm experiencing this problem. Does anyone have a picture/diagram of the connection that I should be examining? I want to take a look before replacing any sensors/sending units.

Drifting
The sender is a small chromated can behind the oil filter with two wires going to it, and a short hose that's attached near the oil cooler.

Lower your engine to get at it. Usually the wires on the top of it come loose. If you have to change it a crows foot wrench set is needed, just cheap from Harbor Freight is what I have.

I just replaced my sensor. My oil gauge was doing the same thing. Removal isn’t difficult. The challenge is reattaching the two leads back into the new sensor once installed. Only way I could do it was to unfasten the male connectors on the new sensor, attach them to the wire leads, install the sensor, then refasten the connectors to the sensor. Long nose pliers are a must. And patience. It’s a DIY.

Lowering the engine an inch helps a lot.

Three Wheelin'
Removing the oil filter adapter was the key to getting it out and back in when i did it, no crow foots required. My failure mode was that it read the same value at idle and when the engine was off, aprox 2 bar. swapped it out and now it reads zero engine off and 2 bar at idle.
