I read one discussion thread here recently....cant' recall on which forum...where a fellow was looking for a replacement rod that broke at the junction of where the threading starts. He posted pictures of the rod and the break. This is the only reference I've ever seen to a failed wastegate rod. They seem to be fairly resilient.
