Default Shifting Problem?

Question for the group. When I am gunning it to near redline in second gear and then shifting into third I sometimes get a slight grinding noise - nothing major. I thought I was in danger of downshifting so I sometimes even overcorrect and shift into 5th. I have never had this problem on any other car I have driven.

My question is does this sound like a problem with the tranny/clutch or am I just doing a crappy job shifting (probably letting off of the clutch too early on the grinds). Most of the time everything is fine. This just occasionally happens - expecially when I am really pushing it.

Default Update

I just took it out and did about 15 fast runs. I completely focused on the clutch and the shift. I never mis-shifted and the clutch was used very carefully. Of course, I was flying and the shifts were performed at or near redline. Out of 15 runs 6-7 of them produced a very short grinding noise right after the throw and before I let off the clutch. Anyone else every experience this or have any advice?

Default Thanks for the reply

I have a 2003 with 19,000 miles on it. I have Kevin's flash and forge diverter valves. Everything else is stock.

Sure sounds like the syncro taking too long to sync. What gear oil are you running and when was the last time you changed it? When was the last time you bled the clutch?

Default Don't Know

I just bought the car about 1,000 miles ago. I checked with the previous owner and he did not do it for the 6,000 miles that he drove it.

Drain the fluid and look closely for metal.

Doesn't sound like a clutch (slipping).

I'm assuming you did check/verify the ECU prior to purchase for T1/T2 over revs to infer how the engine/transmission had been used by the previous owner?

All it takes in one missed shift to damage a syncro. However, before worrying about that, I would first properly bleed the clutch system to make sure you are getting the full range of the pressure plate.
