Stick shift falls apart - CPO says not covered
I am driving my car enjoying the weekend and all of a sudden I feel the shifter come loose and pop. I can't shift and the car is sitting immobile, I take off the shift boot and I have pieces of plastic broken off and the bottom part of the shifter is no longer attached to the shift linkage.
I take it to the dealer and they tell me it's not a covered item. When I tell the service writer that the car is 6 weeks in my possession he says "yea but it's a 2004" wow what a set on this guy.
The sales manager agreed to pay half the labor and they are giving me all the parts from someone who just did a short shifter, so no charge on the parts. (I am looking to buy a 09 GT2 so this may have factored in)
Any of you have a similar experience? I can't believe this is not covered.

Spend $136 extra and put in a new 997 shifter. Much better feel and shorter throw. I just did the switch a few days ago. It takes 1 hour to do the job. How much time did the dealer quote?

They quoted 3 hours. Can you imagine that! I can do it myself in an hour. Thanks for the heads up I will upgrade to the 997 shifter. What's the total in parts for the 997 setup?
The dealer is giving me the parts for free and sales manager is going to eat half the labor. (book time of course)

$136 complete from Sunset Porsche. I think it lists at the parts counter for around $190. It's just one part number you have to buy. You reuse your shift ****/boot and cables. Everything else is included in the assembly. I could send you the actual part number and a link to the detailed installation tomorrow if you need it. Or you can do a search at 6speedonline. There was a recent thread on the subject. It was the first time doing it and took me right at an hour.
The dealer is offering to cut the 3 hour labor charge in half because they know it only takes an hour. They are giving you the used shifter since it didn't cost them anything. They aren't "eating" anything. Not a nice dealer you have.

Happened to me on turn 3 at roebling road on day 1 first run. Ruined my whole weekend but what made it worse was when I saw that plastic part in my $150,000 car. Of course you expect plastic but not where it could fail and leave you stranded.

Happened to my wife while driving my car in rush hour traffic. She had the same question about the plastic part in the $150K+ car. I upgraded to the B&M SSK from Erik at Bumper Plugs. I like it much better than stock.

Have to agree about the 997 shifter. Just put it in my car and this is the way it should have been from the factory. Smooth, precise, short, and solid. Don't put the stock one back in even if it is free.
