I went back and forth on B and M versus the 997 shifter and settled on the 997. I had a B and M in my previous 996 and actually prefer the feel of the 997 shifter. Glad I went this way rather than back to the B and M....there's nothing wrong with B and M....strictly a matter of feel and preference.

The GT2 is on the porsche site im assuming that 2009 will be the same as 2008. I cant seem to get one this year and i dont feel like spending the summer looking. I will order a 2009 with a deposit if i can't find a used one by November.

Wow just caught the CMS cnc post. How much is it? Since the dealer doesn't consider it a warranty item I can install this and be done with it permanently.
Also is the 997 shifter plasitc or another material?

I could never get a good answer to the following...
I have the factory SSK. Even if having that, is the 997 shifter a better option? Should I move from the factory SSK to this?

So the question remains, is the 997 a plastic shifter? Judging from the pic I would say yes, so why would you trade one plastic for another if there is an alternative that would be metal? Help me out here guys.

Because the 997 is shorter,
because it is a relatively rare failure,
because with the exception of the CMS billet shifter assembly, the other shifters all use ALMOST the same plastic parts
because replacing the sloppy 996 with a shorter 997 will likely be the last time you change shifters!
Of course, depends how you shift too.
I guess I'll see how I like this 997 shifter, and if it fails I can deal with that down the road....

Yes...the 997 is plastic...just like the OEM one out of the earlier 996's and it drops right in rather easily...except that it's got about a 15-20% shorter throw and the feel of the shifting is much more positive and smooth. I would periodically hit the wrong gear downshifting with the stock shifter....usually during the 5 to 2nd downshift ....but always felt the excessive revs in time to clutch it and find the right gear....this doesn't occur with the 997 shifter, it seems the shift sequence is much more positive....although if youre in a hurry anyone can miss a shift no matter what kit you install. It's really difficult to see when you're head's up your a$$.

I didn't ask why you are asking. I responded to your question as to "why" you would replace the factory 996 with a 997.
The issue of "plastic' is not black and white- unless you have metal on metal bearings, all shifters have some polymeric components.
I think the notion of plastic=bad, metal=good is not always accurate, and when dealing with a complex assembly not particularly helpful.

Well it happened
Well 4 years ago I inquired about an aftermarket shifter to hedge my bet that mine might go. Well 4 years later it has happened. The shifter let go. So the question remains do I go with the B&M with the EVO links from bumperplugs or do I go through Suncoast or one of the other sources for a stock 997 GT3 shifter?

It just depends on what you want. I paid a little extra and got the 997 GT3 shifter. The working bits are all metal.
It's an easy DIY. I had never done it before and it took me a little less than an hour following one of the DIY posts online.
