Is this the same tranny fluid that everyone is talking about? It doesn't have a reference to Delvan....so is this the correct formula or is there a different one>? Is there a part number or something that specifically identifies the correct forumula? I took this from an ad for the Mobil tranny oil, but it seems that it's a bit confusing as to which one you folks are talking about....

Thanx Kevin....I found the Delvac and will be changing out the tranny and differential tomorrow....it's not easy to find and is more expensive....but you're right...the stuff sold at the Kragans and Autozone is not the same composition as the Delvac.

So....
You heard it from some of the most knowledgeable members...
It amazes me that Porsche doesn't recommend more frequent changes, especially since it's not harder or more expansive than engine oil changes.
My "new" mechanic at All German Auto in Escondido agrees with Tom. If you drive it as it's intended (race track) more frequent changes are needed and cheap insurance.
He also recommended since mine went so long without a change that I change it again in 1000mi. The new oil acts like a detergent and since mine was so dirty it will need it.
If you're like me and bought a car with more than 20K on it, run out and get yours changed TODAY!

Should this be changed on all 996's or just turbos? I have an 02 C4S.

I found the Delvac in gallon containers so I bought two gallons...good thing I did kuz it took a little over the gallon....about 3.8 in the tranny and a bit under a gallon in the differential. Did the oil change at the same time. Good to go for another 10K. Because the TT's use about a quart every 1000-1500 miles, you are constantly putting new oil in there, so I let it go to between 8 and 10K miles before I do the change. I know quite a few do it more frequently....but I don't track it and drive about 10K a year.

Meant to say a bit over a quart in the front differential...not a GALLON....sorry for the misinformation. Loren's figures are right....I just can't get used to the metric system....can only visualize quarts and gallons....not litres.

Actually, when I changed out my transmission and front differential oil with 29K miles on the car....the oil looked clean, clear and damn near new....I think I wasted my money on the tranny oil change....except that now I can baseline all my fluids since I've changed out the oil, tranny fluid, and coolant....so all fluids are new within the last 5K miles. The coolant changeout was unplanned as the result of a blown radiator hose.

Just did both again at about 30k street miles. The front looked about ready, showing some darkness/particle contamination, but the trans was clean and clear. It may be in my mind, but I think it shifts marginally smoother. This is the second change using Mobile 1 lube.....no problems. Buy 6 quarts because it takes about 5.2q and you can stretch 5 to get you there. About 4 in the trans and 1.2q in the front diff. but given the dificulty of getting it pumped up, you need the extra in the bottle.
