Question EXHAUST straight thru pipe ?

Hi

I've had a C2 turbo for almost 10 years now and I've just purchased an 05 996 turbo soft top.

The first thing that I'd like to mod is the exhaust for sound rather that hp.

When I purchased the C2 turbo it already had a modified exhaust which consisted of a mandrel bent pipe bent in the shape of a "S" which bolted onto the cat then straight to the tail pipe. The mufler was totally eliminated.

The C2 without a muffler is loud but not intolerable and it makes a nice poping sound when decelerating

What's wrong with connecting a pipe straight from the cats to the tail pipe and removing the mufflers all together on the 996tt ?

Has anyone done this ?

Stock it sounds so docile I'm thinking it could handle the removal of the muffler alltogether.

What are you thoughts ?

Fabspeed and FVD both make a nice pipe to do this, it's really LOUD and drones bigtime in the car, at WOT it sounds great, every place else it is not so good... you might try the "hole" mod to the stock exhaust, cheap and easy, sounds good too..

my car has an 9ff exhaust system together with cats...

the sound is very deeeeeeeep from 2k-3k and I must admit it gets a bit anoying when driving in town...

it does have an interior switch an most of the time is "off"...
but when I get in to the mood...a click the button

You need to get yourself a Fabspeed Gen 3 if you want to hear your car.

A straight through pipe sounds like there is something terminally wrong with your car and it will give you an almighty Headache!!

I run straight pipes no cats, sounds awesome to me but certainly not for everyone or the faint of heart.
but great for the car's top end, turbo spool up, also loose 60 pounds where it counts and it is the cheapest exhaust mod around.
I say try it. my car has been that way for over two years now.
But I am certainly in the minority with this opinion, still important for you to know.

Tom,
Does your car see many street miles? Can you get anybody with XX chromosomes to ride with you?

Can anyone post a video of their 996tt with straight pipes ?

Or is there one out there already anyone got a link ?

Just want to see not only how loud but what type of sound it makes with straights.

My C2 turbo make the sweetest note, loud but sweet and pops when you decelerate with your foot of the gas.

I am the J in the TJW mod. It is cheap, easy and works. Read the whole thread...you get power too.

An aftermarket system is best if you want power at the top, or this (Tomm Kerr is right....I hope to hear his car at WOT soon...). Many have tried and not been happy, so I would try to find a person with them to check it out. It is love/hate I suspect. And, my wife heard the video and hated it....she likes Europipes of course....

Anyway, good luck.

my guess is, and I could be wrong that the TJW mod with say a 2 inch hole would give the same sound and effect as a straight thru pipe from the cat back but with the added benefit of weight reduction.

Your muffler guy could mandrell bend 2 of those pipes pretty innexpensively I would imagine probably at a fraction of what the fabspeed ones cost.

This would give the advantage of weight and your original exhaust stays untouched.

Your thoughts ?

I should have some of my own design by VIR in March hopefully. Going to round them and point them at the ground and creat a dummy end for the tips. Want to keep her good on Sundays. My PSI loud with no cats drones like crazy already, I cant imagine there would be more drone, and if so I can take it.

I MUST have the weight loss.
