here's a datapoint, just my opinion...
I test drove the 2001 $48K 37k mile 996TT. Very different fast plush (did I say fast) very tight quiet car vs my 1995 C2. Too quiet and insulated and luxurious for what I want to experience. Of course its completely hard to tell performance when the fastest I could go was 65 on an expressway for a stretch. Naturally it likely could blow the doors off my 993 but I guess I see the point of diminishing returns - I am very happy with my 993. My past and future track experience is and will be limited to my 89 951 and I reached my limit with that car at Road America a few months ago when I was chasing some 996 cars and spun out due to my inexperience/stupidity - it wasnt the cars fault. I am not sure what your goals are or why your buying the GT3 or 996TT. If money were no object I just really like the idea of a another white car - especially a GT3.
Best of luck whatever you do. If you want the Option codes for the car let me know and I'll PM.

I'm selling my car, if you're interested...
2001 Porsche Turbo (996); 25,800 miles; speed yellow w/ black interior; tiptronic; excellent condition; Headrests embossed w/ Porsche crest; power front seats; remote 6-disc cd changer; all original except lower lip was repainted yellow (looks much better, in my humble opinion) & muffler was re-worked for better sound; never been in accident; clean carfax report; I bought the car 6K miles ago and had it checked out by a Porsche dealer and 2 independent local shops; all new tires 1.5k miles ago w/ alignment; oil change 100 miles ago w/ Elf oil; Car is located in Short Hills, NJ; $64,000 or best offer;

Jonathan,
I really comes down to how you plan to use it. My 993 is (was) a near twin of yours (and yes I wash the wheel wells) and I've had a 2001 996TT for about two months now as a DD. I love the Turbo-it is stupid fast, smooth, and comfortable. It is a great DD, and I will drive it all winter. It will not, however, deliver the same experience as the 993. Too heavy, too refined. On the warm sunny weekend days I'm out in the 993 and the TT is in the garage.
If you want a stupendous all-around car, by all means look at a TT. If you want a visceral toy to replace your 993, I think you need to hold out for the GT3. I will say, however, that I have not driven a modded 996TT, and in the past few months over on this forum I have learned there are some highly competent tuners here. That would be a much more involved choice to go that route, and in my case I am still a little leery of engine (ECU and/or turbos) mods to a $70-80K used car. And you would still want to lose the weight.
