That's better turkish_eyebrow, I perceive no turbo lag, just the kick in the butt when it comes on the cams. Heck, even my old 911T with its 8.7:1 compression ratio had a kick at 3000rpm.

When I drive my 996TT (stock) like I was carrying a case of Nitroglycerin the boost gauge shows (.1 bar) or (1.47 psi).

I wanted to keep my E55 When I was faced with the same challenge you are asking about.
Frankly, I drove 996's and 997s (non-Turbos) and found the following...could feel a difference in the non turbos between the 996 and 997. Heck the 997 is a fine car...problem was that I simply had zero wow factor after being so used to my torque monster....so I finally drive a 996 Turbo and had the WOW factor I was looking for. get the turbo...its kind of like the commercial or tag line..There is no substitute...

I was making the same decision last summer. From several areas I felt the 997 was superior. I think the interior quality and design, the exterior look, the ride were all better than the 996. However I purchased the 996tt. I bought just before they all seemed to drop 10K, however I purchased one that was set up exactly like I wanted (black/black, full carbon, short shift, ond other items - except for x50). Thus for me the depreciation was not a big benefit - if at all. I believe however over time the satisfaction of the 997 will decline, versus the turbo. I have a chip and exhaust, and the power is completely addictive. There is a satisfaction in knowing that for common day to day use it is as quick as anything on the road that I reallistically can use without completely losing my license. That will be the case for a long time - because traction is half the battle - not power. And yes - it is the Porsche Turbo I own - not just another 911. There is much more satisfaction in knowing that I am driving the current (well almost) version of the car posters I had on the wall as a teenager. I own a supercar. That won't decline over time. It will with a 997 s.

Don't get me wrong - I would love to own a 997 turbo - but it will barely be quicker - if at all, and the other benefits aren't worth the 50K+ for me( partially because -it would be out of my price range anyhow).

Lastly - the engine is bullet proof - it truly can be a daily driver - and the additional power options are huge if I want to take that path.

I think after 8 months of ownership the 997 s will leave you wanting or something better or more powerful, while the turbo, will leave you with more of a satisfaction that you still are driving a one of the fastest supercars on the road.

Again just my thoughts. As having considered the 2 cars.

I was making the same choice 2weeks ago and drove an 08 S and an 04 turbo back to back in Nashville, both priced mid 50s. I bought the turbo, no comparison, the always available torque is phenomenal. This is my sixth 911 and first turbo, don't compromise you know you want one. Mike P

Holy thread resurection!

Nice to see you join the forum 487, the turbo is indeed something else!

I remember when I bought mine I crossed shop with a 997s, stepping on the throttle settled the decision. The Turbo is MUCH faster. Then I added a flash and it is really really quick now.

i think the 997 looks better, but I don't care.

Hi

I've just moved from a man 997 4S to a tip 996 turbo. Boost boost boost..... The 997 was a lovely car to drive and was quick the turbo is a nice car to drive and is scary when you want it to be. In a good way. As said drive both and each to his own.

Honestly, two very different cars.

I have two in the house now. 996 TT and a 997.2 C2S.

Of course, everything is really a personal preference. So I will just state other than the obvious.

Are you a track or drag type of guy?

997.2 C2S more fun at track being RWD, lighter and more nimble. What you find fun in the C2S is the right balance between neutral and oversteer, pushing the fun factor way up. With 380hp, it honestly is more than adequate around the track. The brakes on the S version are the same as the 996 TT.

996 TT great power, but a little dull to drive once you are use to it. Phenomenal amount of grip being AWD. And due to that nature, easy and unchallenging.

Secondly, RESALE RESALE RESALE.

997 are likely easier to resale back to the second hand market than the 996 TT. I was trying to sell my 996 TT earlier this yr with 37,000 miles on the car, totally mint condition. Asking price, $38,000.....people start to low ball me to a ridiculous $31,000!! Finally i given up, a nice condition, fairly low milage turbo for $31,000 is totally unjustifiable, yet i see tons of 996 TT for sale and the owners still end up not selling the car.

So if you are gonna keep this porsche for ever get a 996 TT. If you plan to own it for a few years and switch to something else, get a 997. Is easier for you to get rid of the car.

Don't get me wrong, both are great, again is all totally personal preference. So i try to state the less obvious.

Enjoy

And there you have the greatest advantage the Turbo has over the N/A 997...the Turbo can be modified to really big power numbers.

Your correct, hence that's why i asked if your a track or drag type of guy.

Drag u seek for big power, Track/DE you seek for good handling and fun factor.

My 996tt is for the track, has great handing and rips by the 997 like they are standing still.

lol, i never doubt that for a moment as i have one in house as well. But i was referring to fun factor. Perhaps i should be more specific, it is the reward you get from driving a RWD and AWD.

Excluding if you make your 996 TT a RWD thats a different story, but if you do that, you will need LSD to make the balance. I am purely making a stock to stock comparison here.

Not saying which is better, just saying.

the 996 awd is a mechanical differential normally 95% rwd to 60% making it always feel like the power is always being pushed from the rear. Fun factor is there, 4 wheel sliding through corners is fun and easier to control as well as making it safer. Neither have a good track alignment ,as well I am not aware of anyone who takes tracking serious and keeps it stock, both are setup by default with a lot of safe understeer.

Thumbs up

I think the headlights on a 996 look Great! They look more like a race car, LeMans style. The oval lights are more traditional, but the 996's look a little meaner. Could be a Future Collector's item!
