Your question:
He readily admitted that it uses about one quart of oil every thousand miles. The dealer told him this was normal..... no leaks either. Porsche claims this is within spec and has been consistent in the period in which he owned it (since it had 1800 miles). Seems a bit high to me.What do you think?
Has already been answered, without a thread hijack.

PAG/PCNA in the past would say that 1qt/1000miles is normal/acceptable/not an issue. Post Cayenne Turbo introduction, the number has been dropped to 1qt/600miles, as has already been posted.

Unless there are other signs of oil consumption (leaks, excessive blow by at start up, etc), then this 996TT would be called 'normal'.

If you are still uncomfortable, you could send an oil sample out for analysis and compare it to previous sample analysis (if available).
You could also ask the dealer to read out Type 1 and Type 2 over revs, in order to get a 'feel' as to how the car has been driven.

There have been turbo failures relates to coking and turbo bearing failure.

A quart every 1k miles is HIGH, no matter if it is within specs or not. I generally have to add 1 quart between 7.5k mile oil changes.

Wow I had no idea oil was such a big deal. I wanted to do a oil change soon. Now I am not sure what to do!

I found this:
My C2S did a litre plus per 1000 miles for the first 7500 miles - turned out I had a faulty oil separator (a common problem I gather). Both separotors / breathers were replaced under warranty and it hasn't used a drop in the 1000 miles since. PCGB also gave me a new exhaust as I complained the old one was sooted up on the side the breather was faulty. Great service - even better car.

Could this be a reason why the turbo underconsideration is using a bit more than normal oil?? Or would it not apply?

I'm with you. I've had three turbos and I've never added oil between my 3K oil changes.

Oil use is engine-specific, and may have more to do with break-in technique than other factors. Most break their engines in very gently, which doesn't seem to promote seating of the rings. A thread on this board fortitously appeared as I was going thru this. Following its guidelines, my consumption went from 800 miles to >7500.
The last oil I used was Mobil, and it doesn't seem to be getting used. AS

Alex: I read the same thread... and the advice seems to be working for your car-
I wonder though if a car w/ 18k on the odo will benefit from this procedure.

How many miles were on your car when you changed your driving habbits?
I do believe this turbo owner has been extremely gentle with his driving
thanks

Any and all properly running piston engines will benefit from it, regardless of miles. Gettiing rid of the Mobil Water in the crankcase will even be a better benefit to the engine.

Some of the oil consumption is happening thru the turbochargers. Smoke at start up, wet bearing housings. This is classic turbine side seal failures. The turbine side seals have enough wear in them to pass a little oil which gets burnt by that Cat's. Hot shutdown suck the life out of these units. But bearing wear is very good. To date, I have only seen one set of turbochargers come thru with bearing wear, and that was caused by other issues.
