1/4 mile times...
Quick question out there....Went to track other day and clocked times between 12.8 and 13.1 in 1/4 mile...with modified exhaust...I know the car is not meant to do this...but was wondering if anyone else has clocked times...
These times are slower than what mags post...but I am switching at over 6k rpms and trying different ways to quick start...I guess what I am trying to say is that I am not slow at going through the gears...

My best time, stock, was 12.7 @ 117 with 2.00 60' time. The car is not meant to lauch hard, especially with its weak Front Diff. However, the magazines will abuse it until they get the best times. They also base it on the Vericom in dash computer. At Englishtown or any other strip, its a different story.

Thanks Shank...
To that end, are there any mods you or anyone can recommend that may improve times without voiding warranties? <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Without gears..without anything. THis was when the car was bone stock.

I can think of two, first a lot of practice, using different techniques to get the best time, and second, run light on fuel quater tank at most, this will help weight transfer to the rear and help the car (even AWD cars) launch better. Play around with things like launch RPM, shift RPM, tire pressure, clutch modulation at launch, etc. After you get really good then modify the actual car (I'm not saying you're bad, but I know very few dragracers who couldn't use at least a little improvement in their abilities, including myself) A 2.0 second 60' time is terrible for a 12 second car and is probably more a result of the road-type suspension than anything else, but a really good driver can improve this, try to get it down around 1.8-1.9. Also look at tire choice, all the power in the world won't help if you can't get it to the ground, good sticky DOT road-race tires would be a good start and make the car handle better as well.

I would have to agree that it really depends on practice and weight reduction. I always try to see what my cars have run stock just to see what a normal person can run as opposed to the experts at the car magazines. The things that really improved my times were:
* go to the track with as low a fuel load as possible. Gasoline weighs ~6 lbs/gallon.
* check the tire pressures and drop them (iterative process) until you can hook up better.
* get rid of spare tire for the runs.
If you notice, even novices have little differences in their trap speeds between runs, but the more experienced ones have the low ETs. The trap speed is a much better indicator of the HP produced by the car... you see a lot of 11 sec Hondas running through the traps at under 100 MPH.
btw, why do people think the front differential is weak? Has anyone broken it? Porsche claims 0-62 MPH at 4.2 sec which is not achievable babying the car. I would expect them to build the components to withstand the abuse to achieve their claimed times.

Practice, practice, practice. The first time I went out the best I could manage was 12.8 @118. After a few more trips I have slowly worked it down to a 12.2. Still no where near the 11.7 the experts run. With all wheel drive it should be pretty easy as long as your drivetrain is well built. What is your launch technique?

Experts don't run 11.7. I haven't read one article, nor seen any review where the 996TT ran 11.7. The stock GT2 ran 11.9 according to the experts which is still nearly impossible. You said you did 12.2 - That is fantastic! Do you have a time slip? I'd like to see what your 60' time, 1/8th mi mph and trap was.
Managing a 12.2 out of that car would take a toll on the clutch (getting out of the hole.) I made a post last October (can't seem to find it) about my trip to englishtown where my friend drove my Z06, and I drove my stock 996TT, and we were shooting back and fourth with times. Run 1, he did 12.9, I did 13.1, Run 2 he did 13.1 I did 12.9, Run 3, he did 13.1, and I did 12.7 @ 117 mph with a 2.00 60'. Though the times were close between the Z06 and TT, The TT finished 3-6 car lenghts in front every single time due to the traction problems the Z06 encountered. However, I have witnessed a STOCK Z06 do 11.9 with BFGoodrich DragRadials.
WHat is hilarious is the times I got after my 540HP kit. Since then I had taken the car to the track once after mods. Granted the ground was cold, but with the added horse power, I could not get traction in 1st and 2nd with the PSM off.- Oh by the way, your PSM should be off during launches, or you'll just bog out. 1st gear just stood there spinning, once into 2nd the car drifted to the right, then finally in the top span of 2nd gear I got traction. My times went down to 13.4, and 13.6, but my trap speed went up to 120mph.
It will be interesting to take it to the track once my car comes back from PHase II mods. I will post timeslips and results.
QUESTION To Rennlist.. How far back can we search archives. I can't seem to find that post.

I can see the ET going up due to traction problems, but why only a trap speed of 120 MPH? I mean "only" in a relative sense, because 120 MPH through the traps is awfully fast, but if a stock TT runs through at 116-117 MPH, another additional 100 HP should put the car closer to 125 MPH, everything else being equal.
I see that you live in NYC and run at Englishtown... once I actually pick up my car, I will run it there as well. Will post timeslips...

Of course traction problems affect ET. I'm sitting there spinning, not covering distance. And HP relates to trap speed. My TRAP should be 123(roughly) with 100 more HP.
