Post any S4 or WRX owners?

Any former S4 owners here? If so can you give me your impressions? Also was the car stock or had you modded it. I've been looking into getting one as a daily driver, but still am weary because I'm liking not having to make a car payment right now

Also, I remember reading somewhere about a guy here w/ a modded WRX, if your around can you give me your impressions too.

Thanks in advance guys!

I saw the RS4 today with the Caractere body kit,
it is a marvel to look at, soooo well designed...

But then again, it was in between of group of turbos at the porsche repair place.. i'd opt for a turbo!

I have a modified WRX as my daily driver, and it's great. A new set of tires and full exhaust are worthwhile enhancements. The 5-speed transmission is a little quirky, so I'd drive one before pulling the trigger. It's a very fun to drive car though (I enjoy it as much as my 996T).

If you're comparing to the S4, I'd check out the STi model. It comes with the 6-speed tranny and a nice driver controlled differential, along with 300 hp/tq stock. Mine will hopefully be here in the next week or two.

Yea, I have a friend who has a fully loaded WRX pushing about 400 HP. He just loves it, but I've yet to drive his car. I've driven relatively stock ones and like you said the 5 speed is a little quirky. If I do go the subbie route it will be for the STi. Did you end up getting yours for sticker?

Also, how modified is your WRX? Does it become a hassle in traffic at all?

I almost bought an s4 before I got my 996. They are a great car once you massage them with mods. I didn't care for anything but the brakes in stock trim initially, but once you change the suspension to coil overs - stock is way too soft, then do an ecu change the car is really fun. A short throw shifter is a must also. There are a few things to look out for though as early ones had transmission problems, as well as people blowing up their turbos. Make sure you get a PPI before you buy it and have the dealer print out the service records for you from the vin. Also ask the owner if it has ever been modified, I would never buy one that had been becasue you just dont' know what was what. The key insurance policy is of course a factory extended warranty as some extended don't cover many problems and you don't want to foot the bill. My other friend is debating getting a 02 right now and said the same things you have and basically I am recanting that conversation I had.

Yea, I went and drove one and just loved it. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was the 5 speed, car really felt like it needed a 6, that and the fact that they screwed us on the differentials when they started bringing them over here to lower the cost. But, the mitsu is an option also, along w/ a few other things. Something has me going to look at another 87 GNX this weekend . I'm all over the place right now

Scott,
I am a current S4 driver, 2002 (B5 chassis, bone stock)Santorin Blue, which is my daily driver....daily being any day when I don't feel like driving the TT or the RSA

As a daily driver, it is quite comfortable, gets good fuel economy (~25mpg combined city/highway), has the excellent interior ergonomics that you expect from Audi and handles well enough in all weather.
If I were to mod the car, I would start with the suspension (tighten it up a bit, a little too much body roll when you toss it around) and an exhaust (stock is way too quiet).

With the debut of the B6 chassis S4 (NA V8), there are more and more B5 chassis S4's coming off lease, so prices are starting to soften up. A coworker just purchased a 2000 S4 for $29K (all 3 option packages, Audi assured 100K mile warranty)

When my daughter gets her driver's license in 2 years, I will probably give her my S4.....excuse to buy another car as my daily driver. I'm thinking C4S or maybe a Cayenne

My list of WRX mods:
Prodrive P1 wheels, Bridgestone S-03 PP (225/45/17), StopTech brakes, H&R Coilovers, APS Turboback exhaust, Perrin up-pipe, TurboXS UTEC, short shifter, stiffer engine/tranny mounts, Defi gauges.

Traffic is not a problem, but I wouldn't suggest the H&R coilovers if you do a lot of driving. The springs are quite stiff, and my passengers always complain. The stiffer tranny mount significantly improves the shifting.

I have a connection, so the STi is for dealer cost. It shouldn't be a problem to get one for sticker, as the second allocation is coming now.

Another car you may want to consider is a Used E36 M3. I had a 98, loved it. Fast, comfortable and reliable.

Yea, i've driven a good amount of E36 M3's and really just wasn't that happy w/ them. Plus, can't go wrong w/ modding a turbo car when you are on a budget
