Post ? on best bang for bucks ~ $5 - 10 K

I've got 22K miles on my 2002 non X50 TT. Only mods to date are B&M SS, K&N filter and Kinesis K59R 18" w/ GT2 spec Sport Pilots.

I'm having a lot of fun running Palomar Mountain with the Ducati's, GSXRs and Aprilla's, but I've got the itch for something new.

I've become smitten w/ the ~600 lb/ft of twist from a twin turbo V-12 in the S600 but the miles on the TT preclude flipping without a big hit.

So - I want to spice the TT up with ?:

Chip - GIAC, APR, FVD, or Upsolute ?
Exhaust - Europipe, or ?
Suspension - PSS-9, H&R, and GT-3 Sways or ?

TIA for your thoughts and recommendations,

Steve

Best bang for buck = Upsolute hands down. You will get slightly increased Turbo lag esp in Tip cars, but it makes up for it once the boost kicks in

Exhaust, Europipe is the rolls-royce of mufflers, but at 70% cheaper, I'd take Dave's performance project system. www.turbo-exhaust.com - or perhaps a good used aftermarket system on ebay.

Suspension, I think everyone will agree that PSS9 is the best overall for 95% of drivers. Some people love their H&R, but I have heard too many negative comments about it.

If you're in Socal as your post implies, call up Glenn @ Glenn's Porsche Service in San Dimas. He is an awesome tech who works on GT3 cup cars all day long.

I have been very happy with the unichip and fabspeed exhaust. Everyone that hears my exhaust loves it! The unichip and fabspeed are probably just shy of 500 hp at the flywheel. I have not dynoed my car, just what others have told me. I have about $4000.00 in my setup.

Hope this helps!

Hey Steve,

How's it going? I am arranging another Malibu Run sometime this month, I hope you can make it.

For ECU, you should definitely consider PowerChip. Their programming abilities are really top notch and they have a great program for the 996TT. They even offer a drivetrain warranty for their program.

Stay away from Upsolute, it is pure junk. What do you expect for $500. MSINDI on this board has it on his car and he is aching to get rid of it because of the unacceptable lag. Would you put a set of Hankook Tires on your Porsche?

If you want to spend around $10K, Wilber is working on a very cost effective K24 package with PowerChip software that will be good for 550hp. FVD/Ruf performance for half the cost and faster turnaround time!

Is the powerchip the same thing as the unichip? If not does powerchip have a website or more info?

Thanks!

No, UniChip is designed and sold by The Racer's Group.

PowerChip is a company that started in Australia and is opening up their market here. They have created a stellar reputation for themselves in the BMW M and Mercedes AMG community. Their outside investor is PGA player Stuart Appleby, who is a real car nut.

Here is their website: http://www.powerchipgroup.com

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Tyson - When ? You know I'm up for some brisk mountain road driving.

When was the last time that the SoCal crew ventured down to Palomar Mountain?

Increased lag? You SURE about that? Turbos spool based on engine load given at a certain RPM. If the turbos are able to build .6 bar @ 2700rpm, then they should still build .6 bar @ 2700rpm with a chip upgrade. Unless something 'freaky' is done to mess with the wastegates and their solenoids, reprogramming an ECU won't increase turbo lag.

Now, increase the SIZE of the turbos (leaving everything else untouched) and you will increase lag (as it will take more engine load/exhaust to spool the turbos).

Get the Upsolute and try it. Then you'll see what people are talking about.

I understand you need to get the Techart coilovers for the 2001 996TT rather then the PSS-9s.

Someone please comfirm.

Thanks

I've never heard either Fabspeed, but other people I know say that the loud version isnt that great. The guys @ By Design don't have any nice words to say about either version Fabspeed.

With respect to Upsolute: I personally have Upsolute, and I don't enjoy people telling me that I have crap for an ECU.

*Fact: Upsolute is one of the largest European programmers of aftermarket ECU & DME products.

*Fact: Upsolute stands by their product with a full warranty and money back guarantee.

*Fact: Upsolute is committed to their customers. The early versions of their 996TT programs did have problems. The guys in Austria came up with several revisions of software and now there are no bugs to speak of.

They work on the premise of volume vs making each customer bend over and take it. Are there better chips out there? Yes. Are they worth $2000-$4000 MORE than Upsolute? It depends.

If you're a true racer and need the absolute best that money can buy, go with Powerchip, Unichip, FVD, or whoever happens to be the favorite these days.

If, on the other hand, you're using the 996TT as a daily driver or for the occasional weekend sprint, I think the Upsolute is by far the best bang-for-buck upgrade you can make. The "turbo lag" described by some, but NOT all customers could very well be due to the Tiptronic.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Does anyone know about the Unichip unit Ryan @ TRG was talking about a few weeks ago? I know Unichip has been around for a while, but this is a more universal one that doesn't require a dyno session.

I know a dyno tuning would be optimal, but there isn't a dyno anywhere near me...
