Talking Best short throw shifter kit

I want to buy a short shifter kit, but I have seen several types. I do not want to make the shifter hard to throw, just shorter and more precise throws. I tried a kit that was installed on a corvette and it was horribly stiff so I want to avoid installing something like that.

Does anyone have experience with any units, if so what brand?
1. Did it make the shifter stiff or hard to shift?
2. Was it hard to install if you did it yourself?

Did you search at all? This topic has been covered extensively...there are several choices, but most choose Porsche SSK or B&M SSK (We/most believe B&M makes the Porsche SSK anyway). Some say you screw up warranty if you don't go with the Porsche kit...not sure here. I went with B&M and had it installed. I do NOT have any notchey shifting, just shorter throws...the way the car should come IMHO. Some do complain of "notcheyness", and there are adjustments that can be made. Many choose to DIY. I did not. It does not look hard to do go here:

I went with the Porsche SSK... I read a lot of the threads on the topic and decided to spend a few more bucks in the carbon copy Porsche sells from B&M... just for a false sense of security/peace of mind... should be here Tuesday...

Wachuko, thats a good choice. I use the B&M w/ Evo shift link. It is a short, fairly high-effort shifter, that takes some getting used to...The car definetly likes the throttle blipped before downshifting. 996TT shifting is not it's strong point....I have a AC Schnitzer SSK in my M3...Now THAT is a shifter.....about 1000% better in terms of feel.

Porsche SSK for me also for the above reasons. However, your comment about not wanting to make the shifter harder to throw may be a problem. I think by the physical characteristics of going to a "short shifter" the throw and movement will be "harder" to most of us this is perceived as more precise and the way it should be.....but some do NOT care for it and change back. I would see if you can try someones before doing it to make sure it is what you want.

Default Short shifter info and pic

regardless of the shift kit,
you also need the EVOMS billet shift link
It is not included in the short shift kit.
I have RUF (B&M also makes one--call Stephen @ I/A)UNDERCAR short shifter.

Hey Marty, Toolpants over on RennTech tested those linkages and found they did nothing and weren't worth it. Do you know something else or have any data to support why you would get those? Just intereseted not flaming BTW.

Wross,
don't know about no difference,
it just shortened up the throw, I will have to try a car that has the SSK.
Mine is on the middle setting, and I put in the EVOMS shift link.

Wross,
you were talking about the shift link. I did both pieces at the same time so I do
not know if the shift link change the feel? I did the shift link for strength. I have
heard of people breaking stock link (often at the track, or on the street and being
stranded) not expensive.

OK thanks Marty. I didn't do the EVO shift link cause of Toolpants evaluation. Love the SSK though!

While my stock 996 may not be the sweetest shift around, it certainly isn't horrible, just a bit long throw. It is nice and light, almost never misses a shift.

Sounds like I definately need to sit in a car and try one these out. I don't want to spend all the time and money to install a shifter that requires "Arnold" to shift it. I realized some increase in effort may be required due to the leverage change. I have no desire to double clutch my car, or fight with it in any way.

Listen to me now and hear me later...The SSK does not require hardly any more force...again these claims are exagerations (like the LWFW). You will NOT have to double clutch! What you will notice is nice firm shifting and you won't miss any. I highly recommend it!

Do you have to install the new linkage or is it just a good idea?

Does the Billet shift linkage get rid of some of the side to side slop? Mine is pretty sloppy I must admit (after 50k Miles). The plastic linkage looks wimpy!

How about a 996 GT3 Cup car shifter/linkage?

I did do some digging Wross, now that I know the "secret code word" (SSK) and yes there are many threads on several different forums about the SSK's. Many folks have had issues, possibley due to installation?

What about the Swift Shift Kit offerend by EVO? Seems like it is an all metal bushing solution that supposedly gets rid of any notchyness becase it doesn't reduce the throw so far. Anyone install one??
