I'm getting my PSS9's installed this week and the shop that is doing it has advised me to get some thrust bearings added to the front too avoid coil bind. They said I will here a popping sound sometimes if this is not done.
Anyone know what they are talking about? If so who are you getting the thrust bearings from?
I am not sure about the thrust bearings (like if that is what you need), but the PSS9s will make an obnoxious sound at low speed when you turn the wheel (kind of a metallic ping). I know one fix is to have them welded and another is a type of washer that can be added (perhaps this is what they speak of?).
The installation instructions supplied by Bilstein are very vague about which OEM Porsche parts are to be reused with the PSS9's. My shop originally installed the PSS9's WITHOUT the OEM upper thrust washer. At low speeds, when turning, the springs would twist, bind and release causing a ping sound. I took the car to a more experienced shop and had them install NEW OEM Porsche upper thrust washers. Problem solved. No pings in nearly 10,000 miles.
I don't recall the fact struts having thrust washers. I think the washers are a preventive measure that is optional that the installer may do upon request.
Trust me on this one. There is a large thrust washer that is part of the upper front strut mount on a 996. It allows the sping and lower strut assembly to smoothly rotate about the strut centerline as the strut turns. It took me 3 trips to the shop before this problem was sorted out.
These may be a solution if you don't use the OEM upper thrust washer. As I mentioned, the Bilstein installation instructions are very vaugue about which OEM parets to reuse. I suspect that if you didn't use the OEM upper thrust washer, then the items you've identifed would fill the bill.
Edit: The upper thrust washer is referenced as "Angular Contact Bearing", part number 996 343 501 00. You can find it it the 996TT parts book:Here
