Just came back from my first DE event. Wow!!! More on that later.

I've got tape residue all over the car. What's the best way to remove it?

Nail Polish Remover will get rid of anything! I don't know the effect it will have on your paint though. I have used it on cars and never noticed any paint problems.

3M adhesive cleaner, then follow with a bit of wax.

WD40 also works well. You need to wash it afterwards, though.

Goo Gone is by far the best stuff to rmove adhesive - nail polish remover is very bad for your paint so DONT use it!!

If you are using racing tape, the residue can sometimes be removed with a quick detailer but let it soak first. If that does not work, you can try wax, like P21, last if that does not work, use 3M hand glaze. If use 3M hand glaze follow with wax. Reason is would be least aggressive with the type of application until one works. If it is a lot of residue, I use 3M hand glaze first, than follow with wax. But I have found if you remove tape within one day in the sunshine, and remove tape on 45 degree angle there is little residue. I do not recommend duck tape as that has too much adhesion to the paint.

Lastly, don't ever use nail polish, it can or will removed paint/clearcoat.

I have always used Prepsol from 3M. It is an automotive solvent for removing EVERYTHING prior to painting. Removes wax, bug and tar better than anything, and tire rubber streaks courtesy of the cars in front of you. It is also totally paint friendly. It sells for something like $20 per gallon, but you may need to go to a parts store that sells to paint professionals.

Whatever you use, be sure to follow-up with some wax right after you are done. It will protect your finish.

Is there any place that I can read about it's safety with regard to clear coat?

I'd love to use it especially for the tire rubber streaks.

This must be the new formula. When I buy things, I usually buy several at a time (just received 5 quarts of Super Blue Racing today). It has been a couple of years since I bought any, and I still have a gallon un-opened. This would be the replacement, but this formula I will admit I have not tried. Sounds the same, but the previous version was NOT water based. Darn air quality regulations. You used to be able to clean your care and get high at the same time. Help to defray the alocohol costs so you could justify the expense......

If you try some, please let me know how this formula works.

viperbob, I think the Prep sol your thinking about might be the Dupont made stuff. Designed for pre paint wipe down to clean off surface contamination. Dupont has discontinued Prep Sol due to VOC regulation.

Just get <a href="http://www.carcareonline.com/detail.asp?product_id=10164" target="_blank">3M Adhesive Remover</a>-- It works great and will not harm your "cured" paint.

OK, if I looked at the can I would see that it does say Dupont (dah). Sorry Shan. Anyway, the Prepsol part number is 3919S. I can not find it on the US website. Oak may be correct. Here is a link from the EU website where it is still listed.

Can't hurt to ask a Dupont paint dealer if they still have a gallon laying around. Also, it looks like the new VOC sanctioned product is 3910WB Waterborne Degreaser.
