Post Track tires 2001 996 TT

Hello,

This is my first post to this board. Although I have been reading it for a while.

I am thinking of putting Hoosier track tires (for the track) on my Stock 2001 996 TT. The stock sizes are 225 40 18 (front) and 295 35 18 (rear).
With Hoosiers it looks like the closest I can run is 245 40 18 (front) and 305 35 18 (rear).

(1) Has anyone run these on stock turbo wheels ?

(2) Did they work well ?

(3) Were there any clearance/rubbing problems?

The car is at the factory ride height. I have not put on lowering springs...

Thanks for your help.

Norm

The stock rear size is 295 30 rather than 35.

Hooziers 245 40 R18 outside diameter 25.3"
305 30 R18 outside diameter 25.6"

according to Tire Rack database. I belive this is close enough to make AWD, PSM etc happy.

If you want to use stock sizes, Pirelly Corsa are available at <a href="http://www.carnewal.com" target="_blank">www.carnewal.com</a>
Also there is a rumor that Michelin Pilot Cup 295 30 are available at Tire Rack for PCA members --- haven't checked that yet.

I should have checked before asking you the question....

I did check and the Michelin Pilot Cup R are R compound. The Tire Rack does have them.
They have a 225 40 80 (front) and
285 30 18 (rear). They said that was the largest that Michelin builds.

Any thought on which would be better the Pilot Cup R in this Size or the Hoosier in the larger size ? Better in terms of performance as well as not rubbing and not adversely affecting the AWD & PSM ?

Yes they are. They are more expensive than Hoozier tires as well (around 1550 for as set of Pirelli Corsa). I don't know if they are "better" than Hoozier.

The tire rack quoted me $1152 for a set of the Michelin. I checled the section widtch and diameters and they look like they will work. But they are over an inch narrower than the larger Hoosiers...

The Tirerack <a href="http://www.tirerack.com/tires/michelin/mi_pilot_sport_cup.jsp" target="_blank">LINK</a> shows current in stock sizes.<a href="http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Michelin&model=Pilot+Sport+Cup" target="_blank">Sizes</a> and <a href="http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes.jsp?make=Michelin&model=Pilot+Sport+Cup" target="_blank">and those in stock</a>
For more Michelin tyre info, go to <a href="http://www.michelin.fr/auto/" target="_blank">Michelin link</a> My quick search did not turn up anything that was the Michelin Pilot Sport CUP specifically although I clicked on a reference to Michelin Pilot Sport CUP sizing within the french michelin site -- seems like the link shows regular Michelin Pilot Sport sizes but here it is anyway. <a href="http://auto.michelin.fr/fr/gamme/haut_perf/pilotsport/dim.htm" target="_blank">Pilot Sport sizes</a>

Your info of 295/35 as being "stock" in the rear is incorrect (295/30 is correct)..... and IMHO (and w/some simple math) that 5mm diff is significant for diameter (or circumference).....personally I wouldn't do it. There are alot of choices out there in 295/35 and the reason why people frequently comment on the limeted # of tires avail for that rear stock wheel is that they are all looking for 295/30.....maybe I'm too picky on this but I've been driving/tracking all-wheel Pcars for 7 years and always try to keep the front & rear axle running diameter relationship pretty close to factory. Gregg,
Thanks for the reply.

So if the correct stock sizes are 225 40 18 and 295 30 18.

I have not been able to find any R compound tires in 295 30 18. What brand do you recommend in R compound with 225 40 18 and 295 30 18 ?

so Norm...I believe the problem is those wheels...get rid of them! (just kidding)...but seriously..perhaps they are not going to be.. your 'track wheels'.....I believe that's what I'll be doing...wish I could be of more help...but I'd be curious what you decide on...give a holler when ya do. GreggT

I do not remember if I posted this to another thread.

I used 245-45-17 and 315-35-17 Kumhos on 8.5 and 11 Fikses. I would recommend looking at Kinesis since the Fikse required a small spacer to clear the front caliper. And this was not determined until after I scratched the caliper testing the size. Fikse may now make a center with more caliper clearance.

I used these all 2001. Just a small amount of rubbing on the inner fender liner I think in the front.

Hoosiers will NOT make good tires to drive on the street to the track. The Kumhos were quieter on the street than the OEM PZero.

If you look at the TireRack website you will see that the Kumho is listed as being 0.3" larger in diameter than the OEM PZero. And side by side they appear about identical.

Be careful with offsets - there is not much clearance in the front to the spring perch.

All this with completely stock suspension until Sept when I gave the front as much negative camber as it would take without a file in the slots or GT3 control arms.

I did not do anything that allowed me a direct comparison with the OEM PZero, but the OEM seemed to have almost as much cornering stick as the Kumho. There is room in the car for all 4 of the Kumhos or all 4 of the orignal wheels, but I never carried an extra set to the hillclimbs or track last year.

Michael,

Thanks for the info. I normally race and instruct, so this will be my first time on the track with my street car. I most on the track. I just wanted to know if it is worth switching tires (on the stock rims) just for this weekend. It looks like the Kuhmos are the closest in size and also happen to be the best price. So if they gripped much better, I would just put a set of them on the car for the 3 day weekend. It sounds like you dont think they grip much better than stock. If that is the case, then it may just be better to keep the stock Pirellis. I noticed the wear rating on the stock tire is 140. But yet only 50 on the Kuhmos. So theoretically the Kuhmos should grip much more. How did your lap times compare ? Did you run them both on the same track ?

Norm.
The new kumhos are real close in "sticktion" to the Hoosiers. I was in a Corvette last weekend with these tires and I was impressed. Compared to street tires I would say you are going to be 4 or 5 seconds a lap quicker.(YMMV)
