Question about buying a 996 turbo? Help!!
I have a dilema and need help if anyone can offer advise, thanks so much in advance. I want to purchase a used 996 turbo but don't know which years to stay away from (if any at all) and don't really want to drop 100,000 grand if at all possible. I have found alot of turbos in the $75,000 range. What should i look for when buying one? And also , if I want to spend $75,000 would i be better off buying a 03 or newer 996 or 997 possibly, or are the older turbos still far supperior to any of the newer normally aspirated 911's. Any info would be so greatly appreciated, thanks

A search will clue you in on the changes through the years.
As to the comparison between Turbos and other cars, you really have to drive them. The turbo rush is hard to describe. I was ready to pluck down cash for a '02 Cab.....until I drove a Turbo......OMFG

Look for a 2002---on Turbo. You can probably get one that has it's suspension done and an exhaust....These are tough cars, and the motors are generally bulletproof.

Well, you come to the turbo forum and ask us what would you rather have an NA or a turbo...my guess is we will tell you a turbo. So TT it is...I think you could get into a 2002 for the $ you want to spend. They are so much...different than NA!

OK, how bout an 01...Except for those bumper warts that look really dumb. Hey I like my Glove compartment and my Bose stereo too!!!! But most of all I like my X50 package, which was not avail. in 01.

A little touchy heh JP
The bumperettes are on about 35% of the cars (Arabelle has them), but they do grow on you, have no interest in replacing them anymore. Now, add the X-50 and watch that gap grow to $15k. You can blow away X-50 cars with $4k worth of exhaust and chip.
Want a newer car, fine....but the '01 is the value.

Hey JB, had the same thoughts re 996 997s etc. but when you look into it, the NA engines are not the same caliber. the TT is really a better stronger engine. Now I thought 997s in that price range right! Well drive them both. Same ball park in price, no were near each other in performance.
Then add the fact that the TT has soooooooooo much more "potential". The modabilty envelop in this car is enormous!!
So, hate to agree with everyone but my vote is go for the turbo, My favorite year is '02 cause that's what i got. Cant go wrong with any of the model years so get the newest one you can afford.
good luck!!

Hey guys, thanks so much for all the info and opinions that you have given so far, keep them coming, I also posted on the NA 996 board to see thier opinions on the. I think I would definately rather have a turbo, So the reliability and drivability are about the same? Meaning if I drove it 20 miles to work on a daily basis, I would still be happy? Any opinoins? And as for the cup holders adn the glove box, I think my girlfriends purse for my wallet and her hand holding my drink will be perfect, ha ha

Turbo better performance, less disappointment and same creature comforts as NA. Very docile around town and plenty use as DD, not a concern thats what they are for (oh ya, and driving to the track and home aint a bad idea either!!)

the only way it makes sense for me to spend 75,000 for a 997 is if it's brand new and you're getting a great deal- otherwise it seems that you're buying a used TT for the price of a used 997, and i don't see the benefit of the 997 if it's used and it doesn't have all the options and colors you want. It's going to be slower, and in the end the 911 turbo is always the car with the big ***** that everyone wants. 996 TT is a great value I think. After my 993's are trained nicely these next two years, i might scratch that itch and tune the heck out of a 996 TT myself.
I'd go for the 996 TT. get used to the power, and then throw some cash in the rear and go to hyperspeed....................

With '01-'02 TT prices what they are, I see NO reason to buy a 997. The 997 is nice.......the TT is special, one of the finest sportscars in the world
They are very drivable, I drive 90 miles per day.
