Oil leak requires engine replacement? Me thinks there's more to the story - looking forward to the detailed report.

I (and others, I'm sure) would also be very interested in your service history over so many miles, i.e. coolant/hose replacements, plug wires/coils, spontaneous failures, oil consumption, etc.

TIA

The engine could have been fixed, but it would have been quite expensive. And since one of the turbos showed some signs of fatigue, and the exhaust was a bit tired (and rusty) as well, I decided to make the step to the new engine. As I said, this gives me a new engine with 2 years warranty, and yaddy, yadda.

Some info is available here: http://www.911turbo.com/feature/2003-12/index.php

Actually, there's not that much to say about the service history. Had a few issues at around 150'000km (clutch-receptor, airflow-meter, etc), but nothing serious. The 'boost-hoses' have been replaced too, but that probably wasn't really necessary. The engine-coolant tank also had a leak and got replaced a year ago (cheap plastic stuff!).

The oil consumption was very high at the beginning (until 20'000km), as for all 911 Turbos. It then decreased and stayed stable until 150-160'000km where it went slightly up again. Sorry, no exact figures available.

hmm... I'm probably forgetting a few things, so feel free to ask specific questions.

Greetings,

Well... the whole thing got delayed because Porsche sent the wrong engine!... I was told my shop ordered the right one, got something that was labelled correctly, but the engine itself wasn't the right one... Of course, Porsche's first reaction was to tell my guys something like "we don't make mistake", so it took some explanations before they agreed to ship another one...

So the right engine came on Thursday. Unfortunately missed it, but managed to take some pics on Friday morning when it got installed where it belongs. Notice the new exhaust too.

Bad luck again: a tiny silly fuel-pipe was missing and had to be ordered from Porsche Germany again. More delay...

Now, I hope everything will go well in the coming days. Can't wait!!!

Greetings,

Kevin, I can't believe it myself, but I *forgot* to take a picture of that one!!! I've just asked my dealer whether he could take one for me. I hope the engine will still be around when I'll pick up my car. If so, I'll take some other close shots.

About the reinforced case: did you notice that visually, or is this based on the part number? The old case had a number starting with 964. The new one is 996 and is made... in Spain. (Hi Carlos!)

Pierre, you have to get a picture of your "hotshut down" turbochargers..

Seriously, you do have the reinforced case. The webbing is very noticeable...

Kevin, you can be sure I'll do my best to take that picture!

Regarding the case, here's a picture of it when the clutch-receptor died (at around 140'000km).

Talking

Voilà! Got my babe back!

I'm of course still breaking it in a little bit, so I can't tell yet if the engine's more powerful as the old one. But it feels healthy.

The clutch makes a huge difference too. I got used to my old one, but suddenly having a new one shows how bad the old one was.

The exhaust? I haven't pushed the engine very hard yet, but the sound is very nice: deeper and a tad louder than stock. And from 3'000rpm, it becomes way cool, although I don't know how to describe it. I don't know if it's the exhaust, the new engine or the combination of both, but the engine 'breathes' much better too. Down-shifting with a nice heel-and-toe is just gorgeous...

Now... if only the gas' price could stop setting new records every day...

Anyway, here a few pics (old turbos and engine, new setup). Kevin, if you're interested in the high resolution ones of the turbos, just let me know.

Greetings,

217'000 km = (almost) 135'000 miles

BTW, nice package you got there! What clutch do you have?
