My first blown MAF!
Just cruising around, went to pass someone and...PSM failure, ABS failure and later CEL. Probably the MAF. Hope its not related to the new EVO intake box I installed?
Dealer says this happens 1-2 times a year?

If it is a problem why have I not blown mine? Why has my employee not blown his? Lets take a pole on the average miles driven in a week. I very seriously doubt that any more than a handful clock the mileage I do and I have not had a problem.
If the MAF has any issue at all the added air flow would create an issue. If the MAF is healthy then there are no issues. Just like the plug issue. The chip got blamed but the plugs if old or the wrong heat range fouled. It wasn't the chip rather the plugs. If the plugs were healthy, no issues.

I just had a Evo box added to my car last week. Mine was a factory defect. The bung that holds the bracket that the MAF is screwed into was welded in backwards. This means that my MAF was installed backwards. When I picked up my car the PSM & ABS lights were lit and shortly after my CEL come on. While I was on vacation, the Evo folks shipped a new box to my mechanic and all was well when I got home. I would check the orientation of the MAF before I decided it was blown.

maybe all the people with blown MAF's after installing the EVO intake have the defected units? I'm sure stephan would check them before they would be installed or sent out.

The element in the maf is weak. When contamination or debris passes the maf it will collect on the inside. This causes the reading to become skewed. The system then reads that the system is out of range and adaptation stops. At that point the codes pop up.
Funny Oak, you make light of checking the MAF. Anytime I install a kit in house I take a MAF reading at idle and WOT to see where the values are. We know what those values typically are. If they are not correct then we know it is bad. So while your comment was made in jest we certainly do check them when we do it in house.
Tell you what Oak, you buy a box. If your MAF goes bad then I will buy you a new one and refund the money for the box 100% and you can post the results on the board. Sound fair?

When the units fail because of contamination are dealers replacing the whole unit or just hand cleaning the element? Do the MAFs still go through the 5 second 1200F burn cycle at shutdown like the older Bosch MAFs? I know the element in the older units can be replaced, are the new units too small or is it just not worth the effort/time?

I had the FVD Intake Plenum & EVO Air Box installed at the same time. On my first run after the installation my MAF fried. I was pulling a solid 1.2 bar in 4th and the throttle body must have closed. The gear braking was heavy. If I didn't have the seat belt on I'm sure I would have smashed my face on the windshield.
I've replaced the MAF, but am still getting a reoccuring CEL. I believe the code is P0130. My Pocket Logger (thank Ruiner) tells me the problem is an O2 sensor. Bank 1 Sensor 1. When looking at the real time voltages, bank 1 is about 1/2 of the reading from bank 2.
I taking the car into the shop next Wednesday to have the O2 sensor replaced and GT2 intercoolers installed. Hopefully my parts will arrive for the 700 kit and they will go in at the same time. This **** seams REAL hard to get ahold of. Any one else having troubles getting the parts???
I have no idea if the added airflow from the EVO box in conjunction with that of the FVD intake plenum caused any of these problems. Could be just another coincidental occurance. But a serious increase in air flow is obvious. Prior to their install, I would see 1.1 bar and hold 1.0. After the installation, I'm seeing 1.3 bar, sometimes holding it, and always holding 1.2.
My thought is that if too much air flow was the problem, the fuel system upgrade in the 700 kit may be what is required to balance things out. (?)
