Is the 996 gearbox supposed to be this *clunky*?
I recently got a SSK in my 01 TT.
While i love the shorter throws, it seems that to engage 1st smoothly, I cannot simply push up. i've figured the best way is to quickly push left, then up (like the shift pattern sez..duh), while giving a short blip of gas. (1100 rpm).
the wierd thing is the difficulty in ripping off smoothe 1-2 shifts.
If i push the clutch completely down, 2nd is hard to engage *quickly*. I've had the most success quickly pushing the clutch then grabbing 2nd.
This is counterintuitive to me, as I'm used to getting smoother shifts with longer clutch depression in my 350Z.
is it the power of the TT or is there something wrong with my box?

Got my SSK in today!
I just had my OEM SSK installed today at the dealer...even though it cost me, it is very precise and I really like it Great Mod!
So to address your issue, it works great for me. 1st & 2nd gear feels very tight, but no issues. Like I said, I really like the new feel...

The best thing to do with regard to engaging 1st gear is to first shift into 2nd, keep the clutch in, then shift to 1st.
The B&M shifter needs to be carefully adjusted, and even then the shifts will be "harder" versus the OEM shifter. The B&M will loosen up a little over time.

It must have something to do with the installation/adjustment. I had the B&M SSK installed last week and I have absolutely no issues. In fact I don't notice the shifting any "harder" at all. Also no issues with 1st or 2nd gear.

You'll never have the same feel and speed shifting the TT as you do with the 350Z....Switching between the TT and the S2000 require me to completely adjust my shifting style. Lightening fast and smooth in the S2000...much slower (pausing for a moment in neutral) and more effort in the TT. The toughest thing is the timing of the throttle blips on downshifts between the 2 cars....makes ya think and really pay attention. It's the difference between a direct linkage and cables. Also a much heavier/beefier tranny in the TT. The B&M has been a huge improvement over stock.

I have B & M in my 2002 X50 and I do notice that the 1st to 2nd shift is slow....I think this has something to do with a big difference in the gear ratios. You have to pause a moment before hooking it up.
Once the car is warm, the shifts are nice....But there is really no comparison to the box in my 96 M3 with a UUC shifter. M3 box is much better feeling. But, the shifter in the M3 is connected to the tranny via a piece of billet rod....Solid.
It's the one part of the Turbo that I have never been totally thrilled with.

I must be lucky (or have a good mechanic). My shifter is perfect regardless of temperature. Also have less than 1/8" of play side-to-side when in gear. I agree with Steve as there msut be some minor adjustments to fine tune the SSK. This is the best shift of the 3 (1978 930, 1980 911SC) I have owned.
