Default 2003 X50 2nd gear popping out

Every so often when coasting in 2nd gear, it will just pop out of gear. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't simulate. I've read on roadfly that someone else had a similar problem and the dealer replaced the tranny. Is this common and have anyone heard or experience anything similar. I just bought the car used about 2 weeks ago with only 5K miles - had the dealer inspect it before I bought it and it checked out fine. Thanks for any advice or comments!

If you do a search, you should be able to find several people on here who have had that problem. It is a known issue on the earlier cars, but I thought it had been fixed.

Find a hill near the dealer and let off the gas while going uphill in 2nd gear. I think that will cause the tranny to pop out of gear.

Sounds like your dealer's service dept. needs some help. Do you have a different dealer in your general vicinity?

Greg,
Thanks for the info - will try what you've said. It doesn't pop out all the time just when I'm coasting - I've noticed when I'm coasting on flat or even a small decline. Who knows!
I took it to Neport Beach Porsche dealer - they are cool about it and belive me, but they couldn't simulate it - I've only had the car for about 2 weeks and it has happened about 4-5 times.

This is definitely a known issue and somewhat common amongst X50 cars (at least).

Default 2nd gear

FWIW - I had heard that the steel synchros with the X50 and GT-2s need to be brought up to operating temperature before efficient and effective usage; if they aren't, premature wear occurs causing gears to pop out.

Bummer it didnt happen when your car was in for service, it probably just didnt actu up for the technician. Unfortunately they dont get paid to drive your car around all day trying to duplicate a problem that might or might not be be there. The fact that it didnt happen while it was in doesnt have anything to do with the competence of the technician.

Luckily you're still under warranty and will be for quite a while. If you can try and identify commonalities of when it pops out of gear and relay them to your service advisor at your next visit. Which ever technician gets your car should want to replace the transmission, its a job they will make a little bit of money on, though they dont want to replace a transmission that has nothing wrong with it, as thier dealership will get charged back for the transmission and their butt will get reamed severlely.

It will get worse in time. Bring it back to the dealer at that time. Mine took about 3 weeks to pop out more often. The dealer replaced my transmission at that time. No problems since.

You need a new tranny, that will be the fix.

Thanks for all the responses – drove it to the LA auto show on Sunday and it pop out 2 separate times again. Taking it back to the dealer next week (to have the CD player fixed – was waiting on parts) will demand a new tranny then. Sounds like a common issue with the X50.

So, when I get the new tranny installed – will I need to warm up the tranny before my other personality (Michael Schumacher) kicks in?

Thanks!

This isn 't just an X50 problem. My 2002tt has done it about 6 or 7 times in the last 6 months, with around 14k on the odo. I guess I'm heading back to the dealer as well...

Guys demand a new tranny - Porsche knows of this problem and will replace the tranny - just demand it from your dealer...there is no fix for this besides a new tranny
