Question Limit of tiptronic

I want to tune my 996TT tiptronic but I am worried about the tiptronic transmission
I would like to go for a level 4
Anyone knows the maximum Hp and torque the tiptronic can handle
Are there ways to make the transmission stronger ?
Anyone there who has done a level 4 on his tiptronic ?
Thanx for the feedback

RUF would not modify a tiptronic beyond BHP550 so, I guess, that's the limit. Sharky though, modified his Tiptronic tranny to handle much more than that, so I hope he responds.

Since the computer cuts the engine power briefly during shifts they seem to be OK. I think it is the same basic transmission is used in supercharged V8 and V12 Mercedes.

MacFever;

It's the luck of the draw.. It depends on what day your tranny was built.. A few have had problems but people like Alex, have thrown everything at it.. The tranny is good to handle Stage 4's if you change the ATF fluid once a year... The biggest mistake is adding K24's on a tippy.. You mismatch the torque converter/stall, it magnifies the perception of lag.. I remember last year before the shootout, I had dialed in 28psi into Alex's car.. The car shifted so hard that the rear carpet broke loose. With concerns for Alex's wallet we dialed the boost down to 23-24psi...

Kevin,

Are Garrett based K16's as in the level 4 GT a better option ?

The Stage 4 use K24's the 4GTR package use Garrett's... My personal opinion is to fix your current CEL/possible MAF problem. At packages higher than Stage 4, you have to run the gauntlet, with worrying about your tippy.. Another words, if you want big power, you have to be able to pay for a new tippy..

Macfever, since you are in Europe, I suggest you check with the well know tuners over there. RUF, Sportec, RS-Tuning,..etc. They, probably, can help in recommending a power package that best suits your turbo. Kevin is correct, you have to be able to pay for a new transmission in order for you to get the power that you want. Otherwise, stick to what works.

Kevin,
Besides the reliability question
You tell me the car will not drive well with K24's
Do you think the car will drive better with Garrett based K16 than with K24 ?
And what about the modified K16/24 ? (with less power of course)

I am using Kevin's Stage V ZC turbos on a Tip, tuned for 100 octance, with several additional mods -- my Tip is handling the HP without any problems. However, I have an X50 Tip, which came beefed up from Porsche.

If my Tip does eventually fail, there are a couple of European tuners that are rebuilding Tips for additional power, including TTP and Gemballa (I suspect they are outsourcing this rebuild to the same third party in Germany). Stateside, RennTech is a possble option to rebuild the Tip, as MB builds the Tip -- RennTech thinks they can do it. Sharkey has done some additional research on US options and he may have more info.

Craig,
Are you using GIAC software too ?
What are your additional mods ?
Are you CEL and PSM/ABS error free ?
What power do you have ?
What about lag ?

I have contacted a company here in Belgium that can strenghen my torque convertor
They say they will send it over to Sweden where it will be cut open (oeps) and the internals will be made stronger
Do you guys think this is a good idea ?

Is the company called PSI by any chance?

The convertor is not so much the issue as is the plates. There are a few companies out there that make the Kevlar plates. Keeping the ATF cool is the other key.
