I have a 97 993 TT w/GT 2 package. Here is the situation, when I bought the car I got an extended warranty. The warranty runs out at approx 78,000 miles. I now have 74,000 miles and I know its just a matter of time till things start wearing. The warranty has covered ANY problem I have had. I have an opportunity to buy a 01' from Hoehn Porsche here in San Diego area. It has 25,000 miles, and will be Porsche certified. It will come with a 100,000 warranty from the dealer. I have driven 996 TT and they feel completly different than my 993 TT. Has anyone done this swap before, and what are the pros & cons of doing so. My 97 is holding its value more so than the 996's, and with the 997 coming out very soon, what will that do to the value? Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

The two cars are SO different. You will not be replacing your 993tt with the 996tt. You will be getting another vehicle. They are both great cars. The 993tt IMHO has pretty much hit the bottom of its depreciation curve, the 996tt will continue to fall. My guess is they will end up in the same place.

I took my wife for a test drive in the 01' today, and the car feels so much different. It does seem though that the power band in the 993 TT comes on so much harder than the 996 TT, and that it actually felt faster. Anyone else feel that way?

I would keep the 993tt in a heartbeat, but the warranty is a nice thing to have........IMHO you see 996tt everywhere but the 993tt is a rare sight indeed!
993tt if you can afford the maintenence!

Vince,
Sweet looking car.
Has your 993tt been 'acting up'? i.e. small things failing here and there? If you see signs of major repair coming after the warranty runs out, it may be a good reason to switch. But if that's not the case, I'd suggest a PPI just to be sure, then I'd keep the 993tt.
The 996, while more 'refined', diminishes the joy of driving a Porsche. I think the Porsche credo is 'sound and fury', which is much more in abundance in the 993tt.
You obviousely know your 993tt. Can you trust that you are getting a 996tt with such known history (known to you thts is)?
Just my two cents.

Vince,
I made the switch and couldn't be happier. This is my 6th 911 (3rd turbo) over 20 years and IMHO the best ever. When the 996tt arrived, I kept my 993tt for a month or so and drove the two cars side by side to be sure I would not miss the 993tt. After it was apparent that I would not often use or miss the 993tt, I sold it. No regrets, haven't even thought about it. Once you drive a 996tt for a while, you will be amazed what the car can do. IMHO, it's very entertaining. Get a PSS-9 suspension and a 100 cell cat exhaust and you will be all set. With the miles you log, it sounds like you drive the car a lot. The 996tt A/C is ice cold on a 100 degree day and the overall interaction / ergonomics of the 996 are awesome. Good luck......either decision is a great choice.
As far as value is concerned, who knows. I don't buy these cars and then worry about value. I just drive and enjoy them.

Vince,
As these things are purely a matter of personal preference (and street vs track use of course), yes, I prefer your 993TTw/GT2 option to a 996TT.
While the 996TT is after all a 'Porsche 911 Turbo' which is a burden for a car to live up to, I feel it is more of a '928 style/Gran Touring' 911 Turbo than your current car. I also believe that the 996TT suffers from having been overproduced.
IMHO, if I were to only own one water cooled Porsche (which I know for some is a contradition in terms when applied to a 911), then it would be the GT3. If you traded your 993TT for a GT3, I think you would be happy. For whatever the reasons, Porsche got the GT3 right.
The majority of the newer Porsches have left me a bit disappointed (especially the 997), but I understand (but dont' necessarily agree with) the needs/direction of the company/management. I am still loyal to the brand and enjoy the cars immensely.

Would you mis the 993?
Do you really have top get rid of one to get the other?
They are different cars completely......however, there is lots you can do to a 996 to make it feel lighter / smaller......& ride & respond differently.
Is the 996 bone stock?.........if so, you'd be budgeting a another $5-10K to mod it up to a class of what you've got right there (just my opin)....nothing wrong with that, it's part of the fun.
Good luck w/your decision.

I have driven both and the 996 is faster and has more "creature comforts". But on the other hand your 993 is very rare. You could get 72 to 78k out of yours or more on the open market. And I have to say yours looks AWSOME. Keep the 993 and get the 996 so you have the best of both worlds
Dang I like spending someone elses $$

You're 993TT looks hot!! It sounds like you need to extend your warranty on the 993 ![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I'm not exactly sure what your goal is...On one hand you talk about the higher cost of maintenance of the 993TT after the warranty runs out and on the other hand you're almost saying the drive in your 993TTis more visceral than the 996TT. Aside from any warranty issue, what car would you prefer to tinker with, which car would you prefer to cruise and be seen in, which car evokes the greatest emotional response when you think of owning it, which car do you want to keep talking to others about etc. I think all the descriptions of the 996TT and that of the 993TT earlier are accurate and that they are mainly different. Both are damn capable sports cars, but they just drive different. So what are the answers to most of those questions?
If warranty is the main concern, then I guess its easy...the newer car will be better.

Some Pros & Cons having swapped your 993tt for a 996tt
![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Pros:
Your neighbours may be impressed by your current model car
The driving experience may appeal to you more
More air bag protection
Potentially less trips to the dealer for repair work
Cons:
You may miss that georgeous thing on your driveway
Neck snapping turbo lag induced torque delivery will be a memory
No more air cooled noise
If you want a 993tt back you will not get one as nice again

Thanks everyone for the great points of view. This is what makes Rennlist a great forum, it is literally world wide. My decision is that I am going to keep my 993 TT. 1 it is paid for, and to get a 996 TT would be another car payment. Who wants that? Not me.. I will just continue to take good care of my 993 and enjoy driving the bejesus out of it, cause with these cars who wouldnt. Thanks again everyone.
