Default Buying a 2001 996 turbo

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of getting rid of my 2002 Dinan tuned BMW M5 and picking up a 2001 996 turbo.

The ones I've been looking at have about 14K miles on them and are being offered at around $85-$87K.

I was wondering if you'd give me some advice.

First, assuming the cars are in good shape ...is that a good price to pay?

And are there any known problems with these cars that I should look out for?

Finally, is this a good year model for these cars? I've heard there wasn't much difference between the '01's through '03's.

Early 01s had the ugly bumper warts on the front and solid spoke wheels. Later 01s did not have that and may have some warranty remaining.

In 02, the Turbo came with Bose, rain sensing wipers, the switchgear was flat black (01s are a gloss black). There may be a few other options that came on the 02s, I don't remember...

There is no difference in the chassis, engine, or suspension. I bought a late 01 new, great car. I would think $80K to $90K would get you a nice one, I would look for under 5K miles if I was at the high end of that range...

Good luck.

I agree with Roy. If you can purchase from a Porsche dealership, try to get a certified car that will extend your warranty to 6 years from the initial delivery date of the car or up to 100,000 miles(whichever first). Good luck and you will notice the difference between the M5 and 996TT if you haven't already(both good and bad)

Most 2001's will be out of factory warranty soon - so the certified program is the way to go.

I bought a 2001 tt in Feb 04 with less than 2500 miles for 88.5K - car was as new.

The price difference for a 02 was not worth the small amout of changes - IMO

They are a blast!

Thanks for your feedback. I live in Macon Ga so I'll probably try to go through an Atlanta dealer. RMO - I see you're in Roswell. Any good folks you can point me to? Also - can you get a car certified and get the warranty if you don't buy through a dealer?

BTW - the M5 is a blast. Especially with the Dinan stuff. It's 437 HP. The only problem is the car's so big you don't get that "scared" feeling when you punch it. It's super powerful, but you can't feel it like you can a tighter and lighter car like a Porsche.

With 14k miles, the car should be between 78-80k, but if your going for that price range, I would recommend going to a dealer and at least getting a warranty. However, their are so many cars out there to be found, do not rush into anything as their is always a good deal to be found. Best of luck in your search.

I agree with everything stated above. If you are coming from a full Dinan you might want to look at some aftermarket options:

-Exhaust - My 02 was just way to quiet for me stock. I went with a Fabspeed GT2 exhaust and 100 cell cats. Sounds awesome.

-Short shift kit. Just too much slop when shifting gears.

-Lowering - Again the stock ride height looks funny to me. It rides so much better and looks great with some lowering springs and don't forget to get the car corner balanced afterwards.

This is all I did to mine and it might be faster than my neighbors 03 TT X50 w/ tip. tranny. We think so but it is hard to tell. Very close anyway.

Good Luck!!!

Frank,

I've delt with Linn Mathews at Ellis for one car. He's a good guy, number is 770.234.2100. I have not delt with any of the sales guys at Hennessy but their Service Advisor (Jeff Corey) is one of the best around. He might know of a well taken care of turbo...

Good luck.
Roy
