Default Turbo Timer

I've heard that a turbo timer is not needed with the 911 Turbo because oil is pumped through the turbos after the car is shut off. I think I would hear the pump if this were the case. What's the real deal?

That is incorrect information.. As soon as your engine shuts off, the 2 stage dry sump oil pump which is driven off the intermediate shaft stops... You need a minimum of 2 minute cool down for your turbochargers..

Isn't just driving easily enough of a cool-down? Does anybody sit in their car at idle? AS

As awkward as it appears, I do sit in the car to cool down the turbos. Usually a couple of minutes if I was not "boosting" and longer if I was. A couple of minutes of preventative maintenance is worth it in my book.

I have posted many pictures and threads about this subject... Do a search you will find some pretty good examples about turbo cool-downs and failures when not cooled down. Alex, my question is what do you do when you pull in to fill up with gas.. If you pull to the pumps and shut the car off after a blast on the highway, damage will be done..

Maybe someone can post a few links about past threads....

Listen to Kevin. He lives, breaths and builds turbos all day/night so he should know Seriously guys, what he says is right. Your turbos will live longer if you just remember to give them some time to cool down. OK so you do it when you come home but you should be doing it when you fill up with gas, go out on a date, arrive at work etc... It's just something you have to do. Otherwise you'll be blue...

I drive my X50 about 12,000 miles per year. Since the approach to my office and home have maximal speeds of about 35mph for over a mile, my driving pattern would seem to allow cool down during this low rpm interval of about 2 minutes minimally. Seems to me this should be adequate and practical. I don't see myself sitting in the car at idle for 2 minutes every time I get to work or home. Time will tell since I tend to accumulate a lot of miles over time and hope to put at least 100,000 miles on this one(26,000 currently). AS
