First, proper evaluation by someone that knows these cars.
Worst case, if it is the "doomsday" thrown rod, turbo engines are generally plentiful and reasonable. Demand is low because they rarely fail catastrophically. Whereas, non-turbo M96, M97 motors are much harder to come by as demand is high because the fail more often. More Turbo cars get totaled due to crashes, where non-turbo 996s have a higher rate of engine failure. It's another reason you see more NA 996s for sale as rollers (complete cars less the engine) and rarely see 996 Turbos as rollers. I could be wrong but that's the way I see it.
Well, I dunno about any Megzer block being "cheap". Yes, there are plenty around, but cheap and megzer rarely goes hand in hand. Sucks for the PO. Very Very curious what he finds.

I guess cheap is relative. My sources say $12-15K for a good 996 turbo Mezger motor. That's about the same price as a 6-speed trans rebuild.
Daniboy, Are you able to put a 19mm socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt? Try to turn the engine over by hand. If you have lost a rod, most likely it's number 2 or 5. Can you pull your oil filter? Can you see metal in the pleats? I do have engines and engine parts... Feel free to call me today. 360.805-9066

Yes. I will call you tomorrow if you are available. Today was bad for me. Looks like you may be able to save me.
There are people looking for a low mileage engine for me. I have no external core of any value but probably some internals. As Kevin pointed out I lost a rod through the top of the block. I have not dropped the engine yet because I haven't found a replacement. If I don't find one I will need to sell it as a rolling chassis. No reliable experts in my immediate areaof Spokane that I have found so it would be a project on my personal auto lift. I have worked on engine's but nothing like this.

Reason: Misspelled
Keep at it. Take things in small steps. Several people use hydraulic lift carts that help greatly in lowering the engine/tranny for service. They are not terribly expensive. Depending on which type of lift you have, you may be able to use that instead but be mindful of change in load balance.
I use the repair manual for the removal of the engine and follow the steps by steps from page 1168 to 1182... The car was on a lift (Maxjax) and I use an hydraulic table to rest the engine on.
Thankfully I believe I have found a suitable engine replacement. I still can't believe this happened. I think I may have had the Unicorn engine. Thank all of you for advising me. My understanding of what I have is much different now.
good luck. glad the group is able to help you out. let us know if you find out the cause of this. these are great cars so if you can solve it, it will be rewarding.

Can you give us the ballpark price range on the replacement motor? 17Ram2500 need to see what cheap and reasonable are...

I will document it well and I have found an amazing friend on the other side of my state who can get the ECU data as well. Thank you for your indepth knowledge to Kevin and others. A million questions to come.
