I would not have plated the springs because of the chance of embrittlement, or the brake pipes, or any assemblies that could not be taken down to separate parts. Other than those thoughts it looks great. Plating is hard to find around here anymore because of the various environmental rules. I worked in a plating shop one summer in high school.

I won't deny that it is a bit more daunting that I had anticipated. Engine and clutch; easy. All the *rest* of it. Well. I talked with CMS and they said their turnaround time is about 4-8 weeks on the transaxle rebuild with LSD, so... Prolly gonna need that time. Oh well. It is interested to get to know the car a lot better.
More pics this weekend... and progress on cleaning.

Roger is a good guy, and I am immensely happy with my CMS box, if you go that way.

That 4-8 week window depends on parts of course. He's still waiting for a fifth gear set to start my trans rebuild.

This box has 58k on it. Roger told me that 5th gear wears out because it's the front-most gearset and gets deprived of lube during hard acceleration. I will be installing a Cup spraybar and external fluid filter, pump, and cooler. He told me yesterday there is still no ETA on the gearset; it's been on order since 1/10/2022.

Yeah, Roger mentioned 5th gear was a potential failure point for mine. I really hope that mine is still in good order.
Did you have any symptoms in 5th?

I never drove this gearbox, I bought it as a "good used" part and found out it was definitely used, not so much good.

Well... I've been quiet the last week. But stuff has been occurring. Got a lot more of the engine dismantled and cleaned.
pics...
PARTS!!! But FCP really needs to pack things better. My poor water pump was completely out of it's box. Luckily no damage.
Parts... but boy are they not packaged well.
Cleaning. Boy... the amount of cleaning. I've found that simple green, stiff nylon and a few steel brushes really cleans things nicely and fairly quickly.
Loved trying to keep this from getting water inside.... Luckily I save parts...
plugged... And then HVAC tape. Super sticky, removable, and works pretty damned well. Cleaned with alcohol first, and then adhered.
Sealant tape....
All sealed.
You know you are a bachelor..... When......
Hey It's a german dishwasher. Yes, I really did this. Yes, I just used a cascade pod. And yes, It was amazing.
German Dishwasher....
German Car parts...
Glad I caught this!!!!
Clean German car parts!!! Out of a German dishwasher
Clean!!
And more cleaned and bagged and tagged.
More cleaned.
Dishwasher does a great job.
Suspension and brakes.
Not so many pics of this but....
I was struggling with how to clean the entire block... So here was the plan of attack after a lot of consideration.
I got the bottle of simple green full strength, plugged all holes and tubes with shop towels. Then I brushed and and scrubbed. Finally I got smart and got out the shop vac, took a piece of 1/2" pex plumbing tubing, used blue painters tape to make a "dentist vacuum". Then I went and bought a new "roundup" sprayer at lowes for $20 and filled it with straight water. Then I could spray with the simple green bottle full strength.... let it soak in 30 min to an hour. Then spray down with water and use the vacuum and roundup spray bottle with water to rinse, and suck it all up with the vacuum. This actually worked *really* well.
The only downside is that it's kinda slow, but I cleaned the entire top and sides of the engine in about 4 hours. This is certainly not concours ready, but it is sufficient for me to feel very comfortable with it, and the hulking greased watermelon is starting to look like something you might get power out of.
I still need to do the bottom of the engine. It's a lot worse. So I have started by soaking it in simple green, and light scrubbing, and letting that dwell. Looks like progress is being made....
So this is my vacuum setup.

My CSF radiators have arrived, but I don't like the way they look un-painted, especially on a black car. I don't like seeing them through the front air scoops. So I've ordered some Eastwood Radiator paint, and I"m looking forward to getting them and the new AC condensers painted. Once they're painted I can start putting the front of the car back together. Finally!! It will be nice to start on some re-assembly.
Turbos got packed up today and are being sent to Markski. Hopefully Tuesday I'll have the transmission and the front diff boxed up to send to CMS.
Still a long way to go. My Feal Coilovers should be here in another 6 weeks.... lots more little parts to buy and work on; but at least I feel like a lot of the cleaning is almost done and I can get back to some re-assembly.
