Possible 996TT Purchase
I'm over from the 993 Turbo side. My Porsche dealer has thrown me out this deal.
Trade my 97 Arctic Silver/Grey 993 TT, 28,000 miles, Porsche certified through May, 2005 that I bought from them last May for a late 2001 Seal Gray/Black 996TT, 19,000 miles, Porsche certified through August, 2007. He wants a difference of $24,000.
Here's the particulars: My 993 TT is up for it's 30,000 mile service, I'm the fourth owner and it's service history started with me, but the car was gone though and was certified by my dealer. The front fenders and snout have been resprayed but there is no evidence of accident damage. I think I'm probably in for new shocks all around, definately new tires and I should replace the windshield because of rock chips. Still, the car looks good and has no mechanical issues and drives great. Interior looks new.
The 996TT is a one-owner car out of Colorado. It has all books and service records and cosmetically is perfect, plus it has new tires. The car is tight, rattle free and drives wonderful. The problem is that it is not heavily optioned as it listed for just a tad over $116,000. He has it on the floor for $92,000, which seems high to me
So the question is...is $24,000 too much. I bought my 97 from them last May for $72,000.
I figure new shocks, service, tires, etc. will pobably set me back $3-4,000 or more which drops the difference to roughly $20,000.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes, the price is too high for '01 TT. I just purchased an '01 with 9K miles that was highly optioned for under 90K. Sell your car privately. You are in a bad position when you try to negotiate both sides of the deal. In this case, you are losing on both sides.

it is not a bad deal-i guess it depends on whether you would rather have the 993tt or 996tt. i have a 996 tt, which i am very happy with, but if i had a nice 993 tt, i might want to keep it. your choice.

I have been watching the 2001 996 Turbo market. Asking prices are usually in the $83,000 - $89,000 range for a low-normal mileage car. The value of options is buyer dependent.
Your 993 Turbo as you describe it and if you sell it yourself could go for about $66,000.

As a reference point, a dealer who is a family member of a friend of mine recently purchased from a private seller a '02 TT w/ under 6k miles, heavily optioned, Tip and X50, for $95k (dependant upon the buyer, the Tip could be a negative). I have no idea what he'll sell it for.
All things being equal, it seems that w/ 19k miles the $92k asking price could mean you'd be paying way too much for the car that your looking at . fwiw....

Price of the 2001 996 TT is high. Get it down to 86.5 to 88.5 and the deal looks pretty good. I traded my 2001 996 TT to my dealer with 19K miles on it and got 86K for it and the dealer sold it as a certified car for 89. Good luck.

What does "certified car" mean? I am toying with the idea of buying an 02 996 TT, preferably X50. I would like to avoid eBay and would prefer a relatively local private sale or a dealer, to the extent that they are reasonable with the price. If dealers can offer a better warranty for a used, but still relatively new and low mileage car, it may be worth the price difference. Current good weather car is 03 CL55.

Thanks fo everyone's insight. I took delivery of the car yesterday. The deal ended up $86.5 for the 01. The dealer gave me $64.5 for my 97TT so I think I made out OK.
Thanks for all your help!
By the way, I believe certififed means that the dealer goes through the car, brings everything up to snuff and then adds two more years of Porsche warranty on to the car. In my case, the car now has factory warranty out until August 2007.
