I had a similar issue with the V-flow on my car before I went mafless. Adding the straightener made a noticeable difference.

So, does it disturb the airflow around the maf?
I'm surprised it is that temperamental.

A little off the original subject but, going mafless and running fender intake filters (as you have), what do you do with the oil tank breather pie, the pipe that connects just before the drivers side turbo and can the recrculation/blow off valves just be left to vent to the engine bay?
thanks in advance
