Thought I would provide an update. Based in part on the information provided in this thread we passed on the 996 tt described in post one. It sold a few months later for full ask, $35k and was undoubtedly a very good buy but didn’t quite fit my needs. Followed up on the 996 GT3 that was offered back in February 2020 and purchased that car at the end of the year. The 996 GT3 was ready to go out of the box requiring very little. The delta was >$30k if you include the work needed to bring the 996 tt up to speed.

A picture of my new to me 996 GT3

We also picked up a 944 Turbo for HPDE this past summer, mainly because we could. This is where things get interesting, we are still in the market for a 996 tt for a fun car and will trade in the 944 Turbo or sell it outright when the right 996 tt materializes. Our requirements for a 996 tt are: 04/05, 6sp manual, Coupe in a fun color. Condition is more important than mileage. When we find the right 996 tt it will be used by my wife as a fun all weather street car with some light track duty.

This thread has been very helpful and is appreciated.

Thumbs up I too found this thread very useful but have more ?

Firstly, thank you to all 79 posters.

My questions have to do with the intersection of very low miles,15K, and maintenance implications thereof and the impact of it being a Tiptronic all of which are touched on in the thread but I would like to get a current view as the ask on this car is 65k, it presents very well and my intended use is probably different than most posters.

By way of my background I have done DE events since 1984 and vintage raced an AH100 for 10 years all of which I am retired from. Now I do only an occasional auto X and parade laps at Sebring and Daytona. I own a 78SC since 1984 and a 2000 Boxster S since new. My daily driver an 8 speed automatic AWD SUV which I enjoy driving. I see the 996TT as an occasional use GT car. I mention this because much of the thread involves observations from a track perspective which I enjoyed reading but is now in my rear view mirror.

65k for a tippy? I wouldnt. Thats too much asking esp for an 01. You can almost buy 2 high mile tippys for that. Mileage tunnelvision will completely screw you on price on our cars. You'll still have deferred maintenance, even if said car has stacks of service paperwork.

Now factory 05 s coupe with sunroof delete black on brown with aerokit and footwell lighting? Yeah prob.

IMHO the only real value of a very low mile car (vs. a perfectly sorted mid mile car) is collector value, and a tippy is not a collector car.

If you want a tiptronic, that's fine, but I would never pay a big premium for a low mileage one.

Lots of things that eventually need work on these cars are as much age related as mileage related, so buying a twenty year old one that hasn't been driven in no way means you're less likely to have some service needs in your first year or two. A 40-70K mile, completely sorted, cosmetically excellent Turbo is the way to go if you actually plan on driving it.

IMHO of course...
