Where is the market on a 2001 tt
#76
i agree, and yet. a buddy of mine works for a used pcar dealership and he claims my car with 168k miles is only worth 20k! ( wholesale to HIM @ dealer ) what do you suppose the delta btw wholesale and retail is.. and why such a lowball estimate! was freakin insulting lol. my car runs like a bandit and kept up today at speed with your virtual twin 991tt same color and all

10k at the dealer maybe.
With 10k you can get your lines pinned and a new clutch. Install your brakes yourself, buy an eram kit and install that yourself a used exhaust and a tune.
10k is a ****load of diy and indy money for these cars. Maintenance wise. Mod wise, you can easily blow 10k with suspension new tires and new wheels.
You have to really explain what you mean by a car needing 10k.

I was kidding. I would hope for a car for $35k that was well sorted with mileage and good history. Reality is 40-45k for a no story car with decent miles that doesn't need much of anything.

I mean most cars need something...pinned lines, light suspension refresh, clutch, tires, interior bits, eram...etc within the first 12-24mo of purchasing. Highly unlikely at 40-45k you find a car in perfect working order, and or with all the preventative maint. done. I think a buyer should budget 10k on top of a 40-45k car in the ~18 months following the purchase. I don't think they will need ~10k immediately, but to have a very clean example (inside, outside, and mechanically) I think I would budget ~10k.
Hope this clarifies.

Look, for $35k you will find a turbo that is largely accident free and has had all the major maintenance done, but will need a few thousand in near term expenses, with nearly 100k on the odo. It will be a good runner and at 5 foot presents very well. I’ve seen a few like this lately. Right now barn finds has several 996 turbos on the docket at several price points.

Wow you nailed it!
The delta that I’m looking at between the 996 tt and the 6/GT3 is >30k.
Given my intended use, I’m having trouble justifying the additional expense. Although your comparison of the 6/GT3 to an early “S” is interesting and also applies to my experience with the modified 914/6 discussed earlier in the thread.
Lots to digest, specifically is the 6/GT3 worth the added expense?
Or should we continue to look for a 996 tt, maybe one closer to Mezger’s initial recommendation?
Thank you for the additional insight, it is appreciated.

Thank you, Karl. My answers to your questions:
As mentioned previously, 6GT3 is not worth >$30K to me for do-everything/street-only purposes which is why I chose the 6TT. However for combo track/backroad/pleasure drives, I’d pay up to the $30K difference for the 6GT3 with everything else the same (mileage, level of baseline sorting, etc.). But I prefer period and bespoke race cars for track, so 6GT3 is not it. Regarding Mezger comments: I’m with him in searching for lower mile ones (but not sub 10k miles if you plan to drive it). I can argue that long term TCO is lower on the 6GT3 because it’s a simpler car, more rare (may equate to value retention relative to mileage), and more highly regarded as a driver’s car. But I still believe that the 6TT is a better all-around street driver and better looking than a 6GT3. So for you, I think it really depends on your purpose.
Funny thing these past weeks: I realized that my modern-era Porsche posts (including 6GT3s) frequently compares to older ones’ driving experiences - lighter, more analog, more visceral and rewarding. So instead of making modern 911s feel more like earlier ac 911s, I asked myself, “Why not go the other way?” Modernize an ac 911. Besides, I only put 1200 miles in the 6TT the last year. After researching restomod bits (shifters, HVACs, LED lights), I bought an 80s Carrera. Traded the 6TT and paid up. Don’t ask me how much of a difference I paid to get the old 911. Certainly another can of worms. Lol.

Killer deal for what looks like a nice car. The "o-rings and headgasket" thing sounds like the owner is someone who doesn't know much about cars and misunderstood about the coolant pipes being pinned?

I think it's a clueless owner. The license plate isn't obscured, and I can see it has 2020 tabs on it, so the pictures are recent. If you Google the VIN it doesn't turn up other ads either.
