No PCA restrictions down in So Flo either.

+1 on this.

I wouldn't do big track days without them pinned or welded based on the Golden rule, regardless of PCA rules.

I'm already relieved that I didn't make any enemies at the AutoX when mine went.

If I were behind Twinturbofan and that happened to me, at speed, after changing my shorts, I am fairly confident that I would have been less than impressed, especially since it is a known preventative maintenance issue.

Good thing I don't go on the track.

I recall a few years ago this was a policy from PCA national, not region specific. Maybe not all regions enforce it but up here it is on our tech form. Most other groups up here have the same rule for Metzer engines. Or you can use water wetter instead of antifreeze(pca allows this, as it is not nearly as slippery) and most race cars run this I believe. I wonder if powderhound runs water wetter?

I'm really surprised this is even still a debate. ANY owner of a Mezger engine needs to have this done. ALL of these will fail at some point. You might get lucky and just lose coolant, you might cause a car crash, you might crash if you're on the race track, or cause others to hit the wall.

You can reach @BBiAutosport regarding their cost to clean, weld, and test the fittings using their pipes. I bought a few sets of their pipes for friends and want to say they were about $300 at the time. Not sure now, that was some time ago.

Pretty much, done 100s of track days and seen at least a dozen of these fail...

Horrible engine design. I'll never own one.

So much easier to contact BBI and ask them for current pricing.
but
They quoted me ~ $650 18 months ago.

I know this is for the 997 tt, but its the same engine. Engine is out currently and had a long list being done as we speak. It may help you decide what other things you can do while fixing the coolant pipes.

So, what actually happens when you blow a coolant line from the glued connection? I know there will be a lot of steam and sudden loss of coolant. Are there any parts subject to damage? Anything to look for on a car that had blown a coolant fitting and had them welded? The guy spent almost $8K on the repair.

If there was damage when it happened due to sudden rise of temperature, then you will know by listing to the engine run or when driving the car. I am sure at that point there will be ticking noise, power loss, ongoing overheating issues, probably a busted head gasket, etc. Possibilities and speculations are endless. If the engine sounds healthy and has good power then more than likely there are no hidden damage or anything catastrophic waiting for you. But it's the risk that we all run whenever we buy used cars.

Y'll throwing me off (lol) when you state "price for welding the pipes". Welding the pipes don't cost much, the real cost is involved in removal of the engine and all other components and to put it all back together.
