Default Brake Fluid Everywhere!!

I thought I would share my recent disaster with bleeding the brakes on my turbo. A had bled the brakes on my Benz just a few moths ago without incident. Yesterday I set up to do the same with the Porsche. About half way in to the job using my trusty Motive bleeder, I sprung a good leak, spraying fluid all over the passenger side front vendor. Quickly I was able to wash it off with the garden hose. I found the leak at a hose clamp which I repaired by cutting out a section. (mistake!). I tied again while protecting a little more with rags. Guess what? Happened again at a different location.

It appears that the hoses that accompany the Motive bleeder deteriorate over time. I was able to get replacement hose at my locale Lowes along with some new hose clamps and finished the job.

My plan now is to replace this inexpensive hose every couple of years to avoid this disaster.

Well you certainly got lucky. Good tip.. Learned along time ago even for the most basic maintenance I cover everything, often multiple layers of sheet & towels,

Good advice, I one forgot to reattach an oil pressure gauge sending line in a muscle car, amazing how much oil comes out of a little hole in a couple seconds..... several hours worth of cleaning.

It is much cleaner in many ways to use the Motiv bleeder dry, vs filled with fluid.

I had had this happen to me too! The Motive hoses are only good for a few years.

agree! don't put fluid in the bleeder, just refill the master after each corner. Then failure of hose only results in loss of air.

x100 there's really no need to put fluid in the bleeder. Keeps the job super clean, you only use as much fluid as you need, storing the bleeder is easier because it's clean.

No thanks. Part of the ease of the Motiv is NOT having to continually refill the master cylinder or worry about running out of fluid and pushing air into the system.

^ IMO the risk of introducing air is very small if you pay some attention to what you're doing. The MC holds a good amount of fluid so you really only have to top it off between every corner at most. Plus, the fluid I use is expensive and brake fluid is light and air sensitive, so you have to waste whats left in the Motive at the end of the job. I flush my calipers at least 5 times a year so that would add up to a lot of wasted fluid. Also, if you run the fluid level low in the Motive, you could introduce air that way without knowing it. At the end of the day, both methods work just fine.

Same happened to me with the pressure pot in the frunk. Will use the air only method next time.

I’ve been using the Motive bleeder on my cars successfully for years. I just had one oops. Solution is to replace plastic hose periodically.

The Turbo takes about a liter of fluid, just put a little more in, and save yourself the problem of always having to top up the reservoir with an empty tank.

MHO
