Default Tune ?

Can you tell if a motor had a tune installed if the over rev report shows normal # of over rev's?

What boost reading do you see at WOT in 3rd or 4th gear?

I don't think I asked the question right. if you uninstall a tune and you don't trip the rev limiter. Can you tell the motor had a tune installed? is there anywhere else that might tell you there was tune installed other than looking at the rev report and seeing way too many over rev's?

Is there such a thing as "normal # of over revs".

As mentioned above, just see what your maximum boost is at WOT and use the boost numbers provided to determine if you have a tune.

If you have any hills/inclines in your area select 3rd or 4th gear, start at a lower RPM (say 2000-2500) and apply WOT going up the hill/incline. See what the maximum boost reading is.

if the car was tuned and then returned to oem file you wouldnt have any way to known if it was tuned other than guessing based on modded parts left on the car. over revs are to inaccurate on a 996tt to use a base

Gotcha. You're wondering if there are any forensics that would show a car had been tuned and then de-tuned.

As mentioned above, I don't believe so. My gut feeling is that I doubt there are many cars running around like that, but I guess I turned mine into one (bought it with an unknown tune, returned it to factory tune for now). I won't try to hide that fact from any future owners.

I know that there is a way to see the logs of what was put on/taken off - but I believe that can be done at the dealer, with something a little heavier duty than a Durametric.

The dealer can see reflashes to the ECU with the PIWIS tool if they are specifically looking for it, but it's not something that will show in a standard DME report, and i doubt most technicians would even know how to do it. I also don't think it has any info about what was reflashed, just that it had a reflash. Maybe used many years abio by PCNA (while still under warranty) to dispute a grenaded engine warranty claim..

The DME rev report isn't really useful on a 996 generation Turbo with only two over-rev ranges... You can easily get range 1 just by going to rev limiter and often get range 2 as well even without any improper downshift. 997 and later generation Turbos have useful DME reports.

Perhaps @ceeyahd1 could tell us what he really is trying to figure out for more help... Buying? Selling? Just curious?

The dealer can see reflashes, but the reflash counts can also point to Porsche updated software version. A early model 01 could have 3 software versions. Most cars have 2 "updates" in there history. Most dealer techs don't care to grab the now older PIWIS 2 and navigate thru the menus. The new diagnostic tool is PIWIS 3. The early PIWIS 2 is needed to reflash the multiple ECU's. Porsche dealer will have to "order" the unit from Atlanta.. I'd worry more about non stock Eproms (Intel) or encrypter boards soldered to the main board.
