Default Need help diagnosing potential clutch problem

Just started experiencing what seems to be a clutch problem. Went back and read several threads concerning clutch problems but none seem to fit exactly what I am experiencing. At WOT, in 2nd through 5th gear, the car feels like it is shaking. It feels sort of like I am going over a rough spot in the pavement. I do not notice any real jump in RPMs like you would when a clutch is really slipping, just a roughness or almost a shuddering feeling. In one older thread, Kevin made a statement about a dual mass flywheel failing, showing up as a thumping noise or wobble as you accelerate or quickly decelerate. Not exactly what I am experiencing but thinking it could be related. I had it out today and in 5th gear, pressed down fairly heavy on the gas but not WOT, and got up to .8 boost fairly quickly and no issues at all. Driving normal or even spirited I do not experience any issue, just at WOT.
The car is an 03 Turbo X50 and just turned over 32,000 miles, so I am thinking it is a little soon for the clutch to be going out. I never drive in stop and go traffic, mainly open roads, but do run it up to .8 or .9 boost frequently in 4th and 5th gear. Oh, and my accumulator has not been working for about 2 1/2 years but do not mind as once the engine cranks the clutch is not hard to press at all.
Any insights would be appreciated.

Check the motor and transmission mounts.

Thanks. Can a visual inspection tell if a mount is bad?

Almost surely the trans or engine mount. I simple shake down on a lift will reveal the source.

Thanks. I will get checked out soon and hope you are correct. Was not ready to replace the clutch just yet, but can handle a couple of engine mounts.

Just to wrap this thread up, I replaced my motor mounts today. Decided to stay with the OEM liquid mounts. Pretty easy, took about 1 1/2 hours, no real issues. Have not driven yet as it has been raining all day (yea, I don't drive it in the rain). The picture shows the two old mounts on the outside with one of the new ones in the middle. You can see how the old mounts have dropped.

How difficult was it to replace the motor mounts? I'm experiencing a similar shuddering type sensation and will check out the mounts.

Not hard at all. There are several You Tube videos that will walk you through the process step by step. Here is a link to one.

Is your car tuned? Do you have a data logger device like durametric?

im having the same issues with my car and plan on doing some logging in the spring. I’m currently fixing all the boost leaks. Save yourself from spending $5k on a clutch and start troubleshooting the easy stuff. You can do coils as well if you are pulling bumper to do boost leak testing.

Sounds like a bad flex disk and week trans mounts.

doubt it’s the trans mount. Mine is brand new and does the same. By flex disk do you mean pressure plate?

If the clutch was having issues grabbing it bing it would be free revving more cause it loses ability to bite.

For the record ive changed to GT2 slave cylinder, changed to 997GT3 shifter, changed trans fluid, changed to Numeric shifter cables. And still have this shuddering. I’m on an exhaust and markski tune.

Data logging is a must! These cars are nearly 20 years old. Hoses are cracking, it gets hard to hold the boost pressure after awhile.

I really don't think it is the clutch now. I agree that I should start going through the lower cost items that probably need replacing anyway, before looking at the clutch. So far I have replaced the motor mounts and put a new air filter in. No real improvement. I think next up will be replacing the fuel filter. To answer your question Dcruz90, I do not have a tune, just the factory X50 option and I do not have a data logger. It is pretty much stock all around. If you find the solution to your issue, please update this post.

he likely means guibo. flex disc between the trans and front driveshaft

OP: Have you replaced your spark plugs within 4 years? Fuel filter? Datalog your injector duty cycle on boost.
