Default Things that go bang...

I was taking my car in for the annual service, went to turn the key and BANG. Battery blew up. Fortunately very little of the acid went anywhere. It was an Interstate MTP-93 and it was kept on a trickle charger basically all of the time. It was purchase 8/15/12, so I got 6 years out of it. Replaced with an AGM 950 CCA...

Surprisingly no. There was some on the battery cover, but nowhere else. When it happened to my Benz last year, it was everywhere. Baking soda wash for the entire engine bay.

Excellent....Strange that it blow exactly 6 years after the purchase. May be the manufacturer install a explosive reminder for battery replacement ;-)

Hummmmm. So you have a pattern with this? Strange. May need to ask yourself "why?". Did you also plug in the MB? Maybe look at your charger as the common cause.

Yeah, the pattern is after 6-8 years the batteries fail...but I like your thinking. I'll research this.

No, something else is going on. If this were true, batteries would be going "bang" every day around here. Use a battery maintainer, not a battery charger. You might be cooking your battery.

Buy a better battery maintainer. Porsche's is very good. C-Tek is also very good, and less $.

OK, I get your point... it was on a battery maintainer made by Interstate (not a trickle charge as previously posted). There obviously could be other factors, like I am at altitude, RH is relatively low, etc.

*Knock on wood* I've never had a battery go bang but over the years I've had many batteries fail over time. In my experience they just start to lose voltage and have trouble maintaining a charge until they die if you don't start the car every day. This is my first 996 though. Should I be ready with baking soda for that dreaded day??

SOS, ummmh, are you a manager? Reason I ask is would you make decisions based on a sample of 1?...JK....The maintainer I had used is likely very old (circa 2004), not sure whether it was working properly other than the lights did change colors during charges. So just be safe, I bought a new one compatible with AGM technology. Thanks for the recommendation LexVan (I mean that sincerely). Unfortunately I won't know if it works for some 6 years...LOL
