Porsche recommends replacing any tire that is six years old or more (see 911 Turbo Owner's Manual, p. 195). Yep, I have a set of PS2's that are nearing the 6-year mark, and since they still have decent tread left, am wondering whether to dispose of them when the time comes and replace them with current production tires. Just curious as to how many 996TT owners follow this protocol?
Tire places around me won't mount any tire that's 7 years old or older. The tires on the turbo I just bought are 7 years old, look new and have practically no miles on them. I'm sure they're not particularly sticky, so I won't be doing any aggressive driving on them but for bopping around town they're still ok.
It's all about how you drive. Moderate commuter? Those tires are probably fine. Would I run 6 year old tires in the canyons, no. I specifically select tires that are good for about 10k miles, which is about 3 years for me.
This has been on my mind lately, I have 6 & 7 year old Yokos on the car now, and the fronts still look new. I am considering going with one of the cheap alternatives because for me, it will always be age, not wear that dictates replacement.
I am not sure I would extend to 10 years on such a performance car - in the south - may get 7-8 years - but if you are subjected to hot and cold cycles - probably less. It's your connection to the road - don't skimp...
just went through this, replaced 8 year old tires that were hard as a rock with plenty of tread left. huge difference in ride quality and turn in.
edit: I should mention that i only replaced the fronts. Rear tires are only 3 years old
i cant imagine not driving my car enough to wear out a set of tires in six years...Even at a moderate 5k/year (which isnt much) thats 30k miles. Yall need to drive more!
Guy I bought my car from drove it ~500 miles a year for the 6 years he owned it. Not sure if he put the tires on or were put on when he bought it, but regardless, they need to go. I've driven the car 1000+ miles already since buying it in August.
hope you did OK in the fires BTW! i lost a house. car(s) is/are fine [/QUOTE]
Yes, thanks, we are often in the news but our house never even gets smoke when the Santa Ana winds blow and the fires start up. We quite unintentionally bought a house in one of the sweet spots. The destruction was nearby for sure.......sorry about your loss however. My brother recently sold a 7,000 sq. ft. house he built in Malibu, it is gone now. Looks like a war zone around there.
