Default Issue arose in PPI of my '02 6-speed: linkage leak

My car has never dripped, but on the rack, I'm seeing some evidence of slow seepage that seems to be coming from the lower of the two shift linkage levers. Theres's some accumulation at the case flange below.

Needless to say, PPI shop says 'oh, we gotta drop the engine & trans and you're looking at $3500.' My prospective buyer isn't a dummy, so we may come to a reasonable agreement, but I'm wondering - a search of Rennlist turned up no similar leaks. Is this a known issue?

BTW, car has just under 51K miles.

its the seal inside the trans at the linkage. unfortunately you have to open the trans disassemble it to get to the seal. hence the high cost. no need to drop the engine but thats the way the manual does it. i rarely drop the engine for trans work any more

Split the cost/discount and done deal?
Have new buyer do the leak fix if they're that concerned.

Yes, pretty benign, but I don't fault the buyer for wanting all existing issues dealt with or negotiated. Fluid level is correct.

Has it ever given you a problem? If not wipe it clean and keep a eye on it for a little bit.

My 2003 Turbo manifested a selector shaft seal leak. (I've attached a pic of the leak.)

No transmission fluid was hitting the ground the tech spotted the leak when I had the car in for an "early" transmission fluid service. When he removed the panels he spotted the leak.

The car was covered by a CPO warranty. There was some back and forth between the dealer and the factory on how to handle this. The techs said they could remove the transmission and then open it up to address the seal and any of the "while you are there stuff". Of course generally a CPO doesn't cover the "while you are there stuff" so I would have been on the hook for any extra work/hardware that would not have been covered by CPO.

I think a rough estimate of the cost of this was around $5K which included the transmission drop and install.

But the factory finally got back to the dealer and said it would supply a new transmission to replace the leaking transmission.

New transmission came in -- oh clutch was just fine the tech just replaced the needle bearings and the turbo metal o-rings which is SOP and all covered by the CPO warranty -- and after a while I had my Turbo back.

This is why selling one of these is not easy, buyers get all freaked out about stuff they all have.
Tell the buyer to find one that's super clean at the $ amount they want, interor in shape.......endless bs, eventually you gotta pull the trigger on one and move along, or CAMRY is your friend bitch

Reference selector shaft seal leak: BTDT.

You can go either way; "watch it and wait," or replace the seal now for peace of mind. $3500 is about right if done at the dealer.

I replaced mine since it would have to be replaced eventually anyway. As noted by others, you'll get some opportunity to check the condition of the gear sets with the transmission open.

It's a known problem with threads on Rennlist and Sixspeedonline.

Here's a link to one thread on Rennlist: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turb...-teardown.html

Thanks. I had not been able to find a prior reference, probably due to not searching on 'selector shaft leak.'

In any case my preferred shop will deal with it keeping the engine in the car - when and if the buyer chooses to take action. Yes, I have reached a $ agreement and the car is scheduled to be sold today.
