watt: I'm the 2nd owner of my '70 T (with S appearance group) and have had it for 18 years so I'm counterbalancing your holding time. Before I found out the '04 GT3 was going to be available in the US my plan was Boxster S for the street car and dropping a 2.5L short stroke engine (the long stroke 2.5Ls tend to break cranks) into the T and making it a track only car. The GT3 put a crimp into that plan though and it remains to be seen how things will settle out.

Watt and Steve - I am all support for the 73S, I have always wanted a 70 or 71, but the 73 has some better pricing structures, as I have seen them, and there is usually alot less rust. Kind of a funny issue - I want the dogleg-down-left for first, same as in the 928, and the earlier 911s had these, and I do believe the 73 does not. Though, per the 911 board, I could interchange them (though everybody thought I was crazy).

Brendan: The dogleg-down-left for first is a signature of the 901 gearbox. The shift pattern changed with the arrival of the 915 gearbox for the '72 model year. The big problem with converting to the 911 gearbox (the 901 gearbox derivative used for '70 & '71 which has a larger flywheel/clutch/pressure plate) is that the clutch actuation system is really wonky. The tension in the cable housing actuates the clutch rater than the movement of the cable itself. Retrofitting that system to a '73 would probably be difficult. There's also the issue that 1st gear in the 901/911 gearbox can't handle a lot of power but you only use first to get out of the pits right?

I know Watt. The issue is that I like having symmetry with the autos I own.

I'm not so sure of that "better" watt. With the '72 915 gearbox you have to pull the guts of the transmission to replace the input shaft seal. I _think_ they realized that was a bad idea for '73 (or was it '74?). The 915 can definitely handle more power but if you update a 911 gearbox with the aluminum billet intermediate plate that a couple of companies offer it's much stronger.

Sorry, I thought we were talking in terms of street legal P-cars. The Ferrari has nothing to do with this.

You've come back to your senses -- I was worried there for a while.
